The analysis you should do when buying a company is similar to what you could look at when interviewing with a prospective employer. Look at their website, any published reports such as annual or sustainability. Look at their LinkedIn and social media presence, look at Glassdoor and Indeed and other platforms for employee and ex employee sentiment. There is a lot of freely available published information and if you are feeling particularly adventurous look for former employees on LinkedIn and ask them for a chat. If you are going to dedicate ~250/365 days of your year to a company it pays to do your homework.

I also deep dive the executive team to better under who is leading the company. From there, I look for news, articles and/or videos of the leaders. When interviewing for a company, once you view their website and other social media outlets, look for articles/blogs from their employees to showcase what they do. I find much value added when reading them and you never know if the individual you will be interviewing with may have written one of the articles. This allows you to make a deeper connection and learn more about the company from their perspective.

From my 30yrs of search experience I’d recommend a couple things. 1. Use the internet to find out about the company. 2. See who their leadership team is & look into each person’s background. How long have they been there, how long at prior jobs, etc. 3. Look at Glassdoor and see what’s being said about the company. Be sure to read enough about them to read between the lines. 4. If you’re fortunate enough to be working with a quality headhunter (a very small percentage) they will give you the pluses and minuses. 5. Ask smart questions about what you can do to solve their problems. If you are smart in your questions you will also learn why you may or may not want to work there. There is more to say, but not enough characters to do so.
