What do you do if student motivation and self-expression are lacking in the classroom?

As the article contains ample theoretical input, I would like to tell you about a specific example. I'm teaching a group for IELTS (an English test for adults) preparation. Exam classes don't imply a comprehensive grammar course but my students need additional grammar practice. To save our valuable class time, I set up a challenge game. We took a self-study brochure for grammar (Read a rule. Do an exercise. Check your answer.) and created a shared Excel table to record where we are at the moment. Everyone decided on their own study plan: 3, 5, 7 pages a week. What is really important is to demonstrate some progress every week, even moderate one. I also participate. When you take the time to learn about their interests and the little things many may look past, this builds a sense of trust in you, on the student's part. Pay close attention to situations in which they excel, and tailor your teaching strategies based on that. It requires effort, but doing so will motivate and empower them to do better.
