Create initiatives for inclusivity, belonging, and equal opportunities. 3. Set clear expectations, communicate organizational values, and define behavioral requirements. 4. Cultivate a culture where teamwork is celebrated and cherished. 5. Conduct regular training sessions to upskill the team. 6. Establish a feedback mechanism to gather insights and improve continually. Implement changes based on feedback and evolving best practices. 7. Implement mentorship programs to support career development within the organization.

An inclusive workplace is one where employees feel valued, involved, and respected for the viewpoints, ideas, perspectives, and experiences they bring. In an inclusive work culture, employees know they’re an integral part of the organization, and believe that differences in backgrounds, social identities, and life experiences are a strength, not a weakness. Ultimately, inclusion in the workplace means creating an environment where employees can show up fully, without feeling they must hide or minimize any part of themselves. In an inclusive work culture, you won’t see everyone sharing everything. The goal is that employees can share parts of themselves or their lives without fear of retaliation — if they want to.

Some best practices I can suggest from my experience: - Implement "no-meeting" days. Designate specific days where no meetings are scheduled, allowing uninterrupted time for focused work and fostering collaboration outside of formal meetings. - Encourage reverse mentoring. Pair junior employees with senior leaders to facilitate knowledge exchange and promote diverse perspectives. - Create affinity groups. Establish employee-led affinity groups based on shared interests or backgrounds to foster inclusivity, build connections, and provide support. Of course, create a culture where employees feel safe to share ideas, take risks, and challenge the status quo without fear of judgment or retaliation.

Drawing from my coaching background, I emphasize defining a vision that resonates with both individual aspirations and team goals. Values like empathy and integrity, rooted in my Chief Happiness Officer certification, guide collaborative environments, fostering a shared sense of purpose.

That does not build a culture of trust or engagement.

Autonomy works best when coupled with clear decision-making authority. To build true inclusion, employees need to be included in the decision-making process, otherwise the concept of autonomy can fall flat and leave people feeling “assigned” rather than “included.” Leaders, and organizations as a whole, often struggle to delegate decision-making authority, and it’s essential to creating an engaged, inclusive, innovative, and collaborative workforce.

Seek out varied thinking deliberately. Mitigate bias in hiring and promotions. Celebrate unique backgrounds. Accommodate needs respectfully. Ensure underrepresented groups have support. Blend complementary strengths.

I believe people do NOT generally make decisions or choices with the intention of being exclusionary. AND I believe people can learn to interrupt habits that lead them to exclude. It starts with awareness and ends with conscious and intentional steps to improve. In work recently done in a global company, we found that by 1) normalizing the existence of bias in every human being, 2) uncovering where it's most likely to show up, and 3) creating Conscious Inclusion Plans, 89% of 500 leaders interrupted a behavior that negatively impacted team members. Plans included removing names from resumes, mapping work assignments against development plans across the team, and adding "DEI Moments" for discussion to weekly meetings.

As you connect DEIB programs back to the core values of the organization, also identify parts of the business strategy that DEIB can support, boost, enhance or even lead. Focus less on jargon and bring concepts of equity and inclusivity to life by offering hands of projects that center around the topics. It’s also important to have a menu of things people can do ‘immediately’ to flex their equity and inclusion muscles often. This helps to make the concepts stick both theoretically and in practice.

Google's research on high-performing teams, as well as Amy Edmondson's seminal research, identifies "psychological safety" as a core, foundational tenet for building collaborative, inclusive work environments. Psychological safety can be defined as "creating an environment that is safe for interpersonal risk-taking" - in action, this looks like: people sharing half-baked ideas, everyone on the team (regardless or role or tenure) feeling comfortable sharing their perspectives, and leaders proactively inviting and truly listening to input from their staff and employees. If you intentionally create a psychologically safe climate, you can then build practices that drive collaboration and inclusion into your culture as well.

What I have seen over the years is that connecting collaboration and inclusion to company values and effectively behaviors and transmitting this message from top to bottom on an everyday basis can produce great results. They key here is engagement and commitment from the top towards those principles, as well as having a clearly defined goal/vision which is communicated to all, to triger collaboration. Remember that people value actions not preaching fancy words and promises. It is with actions and tangible examples that leaders can embed collaboration and inclusion in work processes, policies and daily interaction.
