A 3D printed part can produce testing and evaluation data at a fraction of the cost of an IM mold. Changes in part design can be more easily evaluated using 3D printing and when the final design is decided upon, the steel mold is cut and the part is produced.

It is great to validate an test your designs, but tolerances of 3d components need to have more flexibility and depending on the printer having large fluctuation in dimensional accuracy. Sometimes depending on the application a 3d print can cause more headaches in the later stages of the fabrication process due improper drawing and design verification. When in doubt I always go back to my drawings and machinist handbook.

There’s also an opportunity using 3D printed or machine cut plastic parts for design verification/validation to ensure a timely regulatory submission package, and moving to long lead time injection molded parts later for larger volume, full commercial release? I’ve had success with this approach in the past with solid documentation, technical equivalence/regression testing. Key is to have detailed plans to minimize risk and onboarding key stakeholders.
