A volunteer is claiming credit for your project work. How do you address this challenging situation?

Identifying and understanding the root cause or intent of why the volunteer is claiming credit for task he or she did not contribute is an essential first step to address such an issue but however, the volunteer must be told that such an action is not ethical and has consequences if such actions should continue and must use a formal channel to resolve the issue by apologizing and if possible renounce the claim.

The institution exploited the vulnerability of volunteer for narrow interests. Consequently, managers should clearly explain terms of references to potential volunteers and ensure they comprehend before engaging into projects.

Ask yourself, are you trying shine your star or more focused on getting thing going... A good leader will give all the credits to his team members and hold himself responsible for all the mistakes. However, it is important to, from the beginning, generate a culture of “our work”, where every part gets recognized for what they do, and what we, as a group, achieve.

Always stay open to feedback and keep learning. Different perspectives can really make a difference.

In academia, it is illegal to claim ownership of a work you have not done. The volunteer might have been aware of this.
