Flow is a psychological state that occurs when you are fully absorbed in a challenging and meaningful activity that matches your skills and abilities. Flow was first described by the psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, who identified nine elements of flow, such as clear goals, immediate feedback, balance between challenge and skill, and loss of self-consciousness. Flow is associated with optimal performance, creativity, learning, and well-being.

Flow is the ultimate state of motivation. You are one with the task to the point where time stands still, and the moment is owned by your creative potential.

The balance between challenge and skill is of utmost importance and often doesn't get enough attention in brief conversations about flow. Challenge >> low opportunity to build skill --> overwhelm Skill >> insufficient challenge --> boredom This is especially important for leaders/managers to understand as we grow teams and empower them to thrive. Also, we habituate with time, so what was sufficient challenge yesterday may invite boredom today. Constantly seeking opportunities for growth and meeting those challenges will create cultures with flow that grows and evolves with the team.

Strengths are positive traits that reflect your natural talents, skills, and character. They are the qualities that make you unique and authentic, and that help you achieve your goals and overcome difficulties. Positive psychology has developed several frameworks to identify and measure strengths, such as the VIA Classification of Character Strengths and Virtues, which includes 24 universal strengths, such as curiosity, kindness, courage, and gratitude.

Conhecer as minhas forças me ajudou e me ajuda muito a alcançar meus objetivos.

Learning to play to your unique combination of strengths both when life is good and when life is challenging can boost resilience and flow. There are 24 VIA strengths so mathematically your order of strengths from 1 to 24 is likely uniquely yours in this world of billions of people! Realizing that, when you choose to lean into your strengths, you bring your best self into any room and empower others to do the same. Free self assessment is here https://www.viacharacter.org/account/register and takes ~20 minutes. Also note all 24 are your strengths, some top strengths and some lesser, but all strengths (no weaknesses!) meaning even the lesser strengths can be cultivated / improved with effort.

Your strengths are, in its basic form, what you are good at. Your strengths keep changing over time. For example, at the start of your career, you may be good at finishing simple tasks at a slower pace. As you progress through your career, you may get good at finishing complicated task at a much faster pace. You may also get good at helping others in their tasks. Knowing your strengths and playing to it is an important part of creating an optimal flow for yourself.

“Our Talents give us the energy and strength to achieve our goals and objectives in life . When we put them into practice we feel fulfilled and alive and when we used them to serve others they give purpose to our lives. For a talent to grow into a strength it must first be discovered “ Copyright Cristina Palmer
Strengths and flow are closely related, as using your strengths can increase your chances of experiencing flow, and experiencing flow can enhance your strengths. When you use your strengths, you are more likely to engage in activities that are challenging, meaningful, and enjoyable for you, which are the key ingredients of flow. Moreover, when you experience flow, you are more likely to learn new skills, develop your potential, and express your identity, which can strengthen your strengths.

You are more likely to attain a state of flow when you possess domain expertise. Now, mental flexibility can assist with that. Flexible people are more likely to see connections between diverse situations.

Flow can be created only when you play to your strengths and are mild to moderately challenged. If the task at hand is too simple for your strength level, you will get bored and cannot get into a flow. If its too complicated, you will be more anxious, will struggle to progress and therefore cannot get into a flow. Therefore, understanding what your strengths are, how the task at hand play into your strengths, how they push the boundaries of your strength is very important. In a group setting, understanding the strength level of each person in the group, along with overall strength of the group is important to get the whole group into a flow.
Values are the principles and beliefs that guide your decisions and actions. They reflect what matters most to you, what motivates you, and what gives you direction and purpose. Values can vary from person to person, and can be influenced by your culture, upbringing, and experiences. Some examples of values are honesty, compassion, freedom, and creativity.

Values are the core beliefs that you adhere to. It transcends your work and personal life. It applies in all aspects of your life. If your value is quality, then the task you complete has good quality, you have quality interaction with your peers and family, you bring quality to your every day! You may have more than one value - 'Do no evil', 'Be kind', 'sustainability' may all be some values that you live by. In a group setting, not everyone in the group may have the same value, but a basic understanding of each other's values and a respect for each other's values are important.
Values and flow are also connected, as living according to your values can facilitate flow, and experiencing flow can reinforce your values. When you live according to your values, you are more likely to pursue goals and activities that are aligned with your true self and that give you a sense of meaning and fulfillment. This can increase your satisfaction and engagement, which can lead to flow. Furthermore, when you experience flow, you are more likely to act in congruence with your values, as flow involves a sense of clarity and focus, and a loss of distractions and conflicts.

Values are things that matter to you, and they guide your decisions and behaviors. Flow can increase when you do things that matter to you because it is connected to your heart. Those activities can become easier, more enjoyable, and natural, allowing you to use more of your instincts and talents.

Values will also shape our intrinsic motivation, and activities and goals for which we have intrinsic motivation are much more likely to lead us to flow.

Lets start with an example here. When you are doing a task, your value will determine how or when you complete that task. If you value quality of work, then a task is complete according to you only when you achieve the quality you are happy with. If you value customer success, you will consider a task complete when you have provided the best outcome to your customer. You can be in a flow, when you can get immediate progress feedback in what you are doing. What constitutes as progress depends on your values. In a group setting, as individual values may be different, its important to give clarity on what values you will adhere to as a group ahead of time.
Purpose is a sense of having a meaningful direction and contribution in life. It is a higher-level goal that transcends your immediate needs and wants, and that connects you to something larger than yourself. Purpose can be derived from various sources, such as your personal passions, your relationships, your work, or your spirituality. Purpose can give you a sense of coherence, motivation, and resilience.

Purpose can also be derived from pain, from the way you've chosen to make meaning out of your challenges and then connecting them to improving similar situations for others. From identifying problems you have faced and choosing to focus on solutions. Patient advocacy, for example, enables those navigating health journeys to identify ways to improve the process for others - and in doing so find purpose in their own serious health challenges. Truly win-win in the most meaningful ways.
Purpose and flow are also intertwined, as having a purpose can foster flow, and experiencing flow can enhance your purpose. When you have a purpose, you are more likely to engage in activities that are relevant and significant for you and for others, which can increase your intrinsic motivation and enjoyment. This can trigger flow, as flow requires a strong interest and commitment to the activity. Additionally, when you experience flow, you are more likely to feel that you are making a positive impact and expressing your true self, which can deepen your sense of purpose.

Your purpose is also connected with your passion. Since flow requires a strong sense of self, interest, and enjoyment, purpose and passion can trigger it. Purpose and passion help you create a sense of belonging in the world because what you do matters, and you contribute to a better society. As humans, one of our hierarchy needs is belonging. In return, it will also increase your flow state so that you can continue to create meaningful activities.

Mindfulness is another positive psychology concept strongly related to flow - it is a similar state of mind, but less goal-oriented. Working on our mindfulness abilities will be a strong contributor to our ability to experience flow, as it will strengthen our focus and concentration (an important prerequisites to flow).
