One thing I have found helpful is also to be vulnerable. Showing vulnerability is not a weakness. As humans we are not perfect and that's the way we can relate to others and build connection and trust. Don't be afraid to say I don't know if you don't know an answer to something, or ask for forgiveness if you made a mistake. Or if you are having a bad day, share what you are going through. Usually, I would remove myself from the conversation to allow both parties to calm, collect, and reengage. I firmly believe nothing constructive comes from a heated argument. In my experience, gratitude/appreciation is the best way to build relationships and is easy to give but rarely given. It is even better when you surprise them with a thank you that they were not expecting. It has happened to me many times, that I would send a thank you note to a co-worker or my manager for their support, efforts, and collaboration on a Friday evening and I would get a response as they can enjoy their weekend more. It's a great end to the week. So send gratitude to someone you have not thanked in a while and if possible do it on Friday and see the difference you make in others' life.

One important thing is that great relationship builders don't have expectations set for others. They create agreements if necessary. As a mother, if I expect my toddler to brush his teeth on his own when he is two years old, I will be genuinely disappointed if he doesn't meet my expectations. And if he did it alone, I wouldn't be as happy because I expected it of him. And I don't even appreciate it. If I don't set any expectations, I will be pleasantly surprised. I appreciate his efforts, and he feels good about it. It creates happiness for both of us in the mother-son relationship.
