How do you scaffold learning with instructional design models?

ADDIE is more than an instructional design model. It is an engineering model. All problems begin with analysis. Then you design a solution and develop the tools. Then you implement something and evaluate its effectiveness.

This is simply a structural framework that helps to design usable and scalable tailored contents that aligns with learners expectations and professional requirement. There are numerous models to achieve this such as SAM (Successive approximation model) and Kirkpatrick's four levels of evaluation which helps to assess the effectiveness of set instructions.

Scaffolding learning with instructional design models involves structuring content in a way that builds upon learners' existing knowledge while progressively challenging them. Start by applying models like Bloom's Taxonomy to sequence learning objectives from simple to complex. Incorporate scaffolding techniques such as providing contextual examples, guided practice, and feedback loops. Utilize the SAM model (Successive Approximation Model) for rapid prototyping, allowing for iterative testing and refinement of scaffolding strategies. Encourage self-regulated learning through the use of the ARCS model (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction), motivating learners by making content engaging and directly applicable to their needs.

Instructional design models are always useful when designing training. This is especially the case when starting out. The temptation can be to jump in and make everything about the content that you think your learners need. The scaffold provided by an instructional design model is a great enabler. When you start with learning outcomes, this scaffold helps structure your content in a way that learners will go on an effective learning journey. You can focus on what content belongs where and how it should be used without having to re-invent the learning process.

Adapting the scaffolds is all part of a well planned lesson sequence. Periods of reflection allow the instructor to see what worked and more importantly, what didn't so that the following lessons can be adjusted as necessary. Getting feedback from learners is equally important to enable the information to be passed in the most suitable fashion.

The ADDIE model is a proven method of scaffolding and one that I have implemented before. The analysis and design stage is critical to success because this builds the foundation of your training. Without a strong baseline of where to start, you will start off on the wrong foot. This is where communication to the customer or client is key. Understanding their goals, where they are today versus where they want to end up. The key to this model is the crawl/walk/run method. Start small, and continue through small wins and gaining experience.
