How do you promote a culture of collaborative leadership in your organization or network?

The idea of collaboration is "common-ness" if your idea is not common to mine, there is no synergy to collaborate. So this idea needs to be defined with purpose, align it with organization's value. Creating a sense of accountability within collaborators is an attribute of a shared purpose. Roles, expectations and responsibilities are well understood going forward.

To promote a culture of collaborative leadership, foster an environment where transparency, inclusivity, and mutual respect are valued. Encourage open communication and active listening among team members, emphasizing the importance of sharing ideas, feedback, and perspectives. Lead by example by demonstrating humility, empathy, and a willingness to collaborate with others. Provide opportunities for skill development, team-building activities, and cross-functional projects to strengthen relationships and foster a sense of unity. Celebrate and recognize collaborative efforts and achievements to reinforce the importance of working together towards common goals.

Defining a clear and inspiring common purpose is crucial for effective collaborative leadership. It fosters shared ownership and accountability, navigates complexity, and catalyzes innovation. By aligning team members around a common goal, you can drive passion, creativity, and success in your collaborative endeavors. When individuals understand and embrace the common purpose, it creates a strong sense of unity and direction within the team. By continually reinforcing the shared goal and its significance, collaborative leaders can sustain motivation and momentum towards achieving collective success.

I have been fortunate to witness the creation of the fourth-largest sugar company in the world or may I say growth of a not-so-large sugar company into a very large sugar company what mattered here were the shared vision and value system…it was agreed that we were to be the best and we would to create benchmarks. It kept the team motivated and honed great team spirit.

Cultivating trust and respect is vital for successful collaborative leadership. By creating a safe and inclusive environment through open communication, empathy, and recognition, leaders can foster a culture where team members feel valued, empowered, and motivated to contribute their best work. Trust and respect form the foundation for strong relationships, effective collaboration, and innovative outcomes within a team.

I’d underscore that both trust and autonomy are critical elements of successful collaborations. I’ve seen many organizations set up hierarchical, permission-based structures and then tell employees to “go collaborate” because the leaders read in HBR that collaboration increases productivity. A related note on DEI: studies have shown that diverse groups can be more innovative, but that’s only if the organization is willing to invest in diversity management. Just throwing a diverse group together and stepping back does not lead to a better or even equivalent outcome.

Open communication is the key - People need to feel their perspectives are valued and they won't be judged for speaking up. Making it clear that there are no "bad" ideas. Respect everyone's voice and ideas to unlock an organization's full potential.

I would often organise activities outside of regular work and would have competitions forming new teams. The teams wanting to win respected the best players and, the official hierarchy regardless. I could see the team spirit growing and collaboration forging and of course, the enablers were mutual respect and faith!

It has to be about the team winning or losing and never about an individual wining or losing and with this forming the organisational culture will mean that each will be more than happy to hear any winning proposal, who it is coming from irrespective and will also foster mutual respect for the team members.

By valuing and leveraging the unique strengths of each team member, leaders can create a dynamic and inclusive environment that drives success and impact in collaborative endeavors.

The diversity has to be always celebrated as no one person knows it all and each is required to always be working upon enhancing their learning curve. Interestingly, each language, which comes with diversity, holds enough wisdom which has survived thousands of years and can help enhance that learning curve as persons from diverse background bring such wisdom to the team.

In addition to this, collaborative leadership involves recognizing the significance of neurodiversity, including conditions like ADHD and dyslexia. Embracing diverse perspectives and experiences, including those associated with neurodivergent conditions, not only enhances creativity and innovation but also enriches collaboration by tapping into unique strengths. Recognizing and valuing neurodiversity contributes to a more inclusive and effective collaborative environment. Have a look at organisations such as Do-It Solutions in the UK or ADHD Foundation who offer resources and trainings for individuals, teams or organisations.

In Kijiji Kwetu, we actively promote diversity and inclusion to nurture collaborative leadership. Diversity and Inclusion help in bringing new perspectives, driven from individual experiences. Collaboration means solving the problem in a more efficient and creative way. Having a diverse group accelerates this notion. I am a Consultant turned Comedian. I run a couple of venues of Standup Comedy in India. In the lineup of performing comedians i always make sure that D&I is maintained, not just for the sake of it, but truly in its ethos. In a lineup of say 5 to 7 people, there is always 1 female comedian, one new micer, one who is slightly famous, and so on. The group is smarter than the individual....usually. What's the exception: When one individual is an expert on the topic. The group should defer to an expert.

If there is no trust in the abilities of others, there will be no new ideas. Everything will be channeled through hierarchies of an organization. Everybody will tweak any idea to their position. Therefore everyone has to be able to make an impact. I am not saying there should not be hierarchies and roles! You need those to execute and work effectively. Everyone has to know what to do, who is responsible, and what to ask for help.

Learning entails humility and respect. The students, in most societies of the world, are seen to feel grateful to their teachers, and the contribution of the teachers is seen as little more than just a mode of earning a livelihood. This is seen to have become a societal norm. As societies evolve, the leaders are seen as being grateful to anyone they learn from - no wonder, the others in the organization are seen to emulate the leaders, thence beginning an organizational culture of respecting any source of learning. I would feel that when an organization cherishes such a value system of gratitude to a source of learning, the organization matures and evolves, also making it better placed to adapt - I have seen my organizations benefit.

I hold to the idea that one of the key components of collaboration is curiosity. Asking questions, actively listening and open back-and-forth communication is essential to learn and adapt to changing environments as needed.

Regular reviews and updates to the common purpose can keep it relevant and resonant with the team. Additionally, celebrating achievements that align with the common purpose can reinforce its importance and keep the team motivated. Remember, a common purpose is not a static statement, but a dynamic guide that helps steer the organization towards its goals.

One of the ways that I foster collaborative leadership is through Virtual Book Club on LinkedIn. We all have a common goal to learn and discuss the books we read and we have been meeting regularly to discuss books on leadership, societal trends, culture, diversity and even themes in science and historical fiction pieces. If you are looking to join a book club that meets virtually follow "VIRTUAL BOOK CLUB" in all capitals on LinkedIn. VBC has been reading since October 2020. It's a way to get diverse view points and network online.

As the team leader make sure teammembers learn and master the roles of members. This can be done through trainings instill awareness, appreciation and comprehension of fellow teammates' importance and selecting members to "deputise" roles of other teammates to enhance continuity in case of membership attrition or absenteeism.

The question points to collaborative leadership being a matter of culture, which is a very important point. Culture includes a number of explicit elements, and also a number of implicit ones --which is one it is often represented with the metaphore of an iceberg, showing how much is underneath the surface! In terms of collaborative leadership, that culture brings together 2 notions: how we collaborate in the organization, and how we lead.

In my experience, the very first milestone is to gather people with the mindset that will make a culture of collaborative leadership possible to start with. Recruiting people with that mindset, and guiding the members of the organization that need help understanding where the organization is going. A number of methods and training can help, as long as they reflect what is practiced in the organizations: non violent communications for example. I highly recommend external trainers or consultants to make sure that everyone is treated in a collaborative way with no bias.
