When crafting your story, don't lose track of your intended audience. Storytelling is esentially a co-creating process - you do the telling and they translate your words, ideas and images into their version of your story. Make sure it is one that makes them care!

If you're working on audience response then, yes, it makes the most sense to collect feedback from your audience. Bear in mind that there will be an array of factors that will be largely random in an audience (especially a big one), so unless you're doing large-scale quantitative feedback collection, try to make your sample responders as demographically similar as possible. Finally, remember to ask targeted questions that directly pertain to the progression you're striving to measure for yourself.

The best way to measure our storytelling progress, is to ASK FOR FEEDBACK! After sharing my content, I would often seek feedback from my peers, readers, critique partners, or target audience members. I would as them: "What resonated with you?" or "Did the story flow smoothly?" I encourage critiques that are honest, whether the feedback is positive or negative.

For this to work, it's essential to create a logical correlation between your rubric criteria and ultimate goal(s) - overly generalised factors won't give you enough input to work with, and won't help you with targeted improvement efforts.

Personally, we rely less on rubrics, and more on frameworks. If you teach your people to fish, they'll eat forever. Stories have structure, but stories are also fluid. Using a rubric puts you too much into a rigorous box when we should really be judging 2 things: How was the audience transformed, and how did you go about getting them there?

One of my fav structures go like this: - Build tension. - Give more context. - Release. People get so confused when it comes to storytelling when really we’re natural storytellers.

I recently completed personal branding projects with two CEOs with distinctly different ideas on measurement. One was backed by an internal marketing team, and the other had more of a hands-on founder personality.
