Always remember most of our communication is non-verbal, words are important, I believe truly believing in the feedback, valuing the importance and wanting the person you give the feedback to flourish and grow is a super important pre-requisite. Cross-functional collaboration is huge. Many companies, especially in healthcare and health tech, really enjoy their silos. But silos are not efficient. Cross-functional teams can break down silos and find holistic solutions.

The biggest mistake that I see in this regard is when organizations have contests in which their people are competing against each other instead of WITH each other. It is counterintuitive to expect genuine collaboration when I get the bigger (incentive) if I surpass my colleague. So, we need to stop promoting competition against fellow staff and start putting measures in place that reward collaboration and communication. If I (as a human being) have MORE to gain from working WITH my team than working against it, then I am MUCH more likely to do so! This is a key factor! :)

I have worked in about 25 states in India. My team in Bihar & Jharkhand were motivated by something. The team in Orissa & Assam by something else. Rajasthan was different than Gujarat which was different than Karnataka. Before incentivising teamwork, one needs to understand what motivates whom. While Maslows Hierarchy works well, i have realised that is not always the case. As a leader one has to understand that and then design the programs accordingly.

In my opinion, some things to have in consideration: - Practice was you say - Incentive get togethers with a mix of professional and more ludic environment , such as Team Building - Show that the hierarchy is necessary but show also that even Senior Managers should be accessible and work as a Team with the lower graded employees - Show clearly the common objective of Teamwork - many times the achievement of the same purpose make wonders - Even some employees say they don't like get together or socialise, a good leader can demonstrate the benefits of joining - Some personalities can influence positively in a way to form a Team that is aligned and focused in the results.

While not everyone needs to excel in both, the team as a whole should.
