How do you enforce safety equipment and tool policies?

Periodic safety meetings should be conducted with emphasis on the importance of following laid down standard operating procedures. By way of incentives sincere workers / section team leaders could be awarded letters of appreciation/ cash incentives.

Training which includes hands in and written expectations is a fundamental starting point. Once training is complete, follow up with periodic field visits and ride alongs or shadowing at the facility. The time helps develop the relationship and build trust. The culture has to support feedback and coaching, and it has to be given.

Ditto on the clear expectations with the added comment that you cannot do it alone!!! You got to have all leaders, supervisors, and managers ensuring those expectations are being met!!

We have seen equipments & tools tackles plays a key role on catagory wise incidents.. the process of having right Preventive maintenance, integrated daily check as per JH, DWM, PSC is an enablers to prevent incidents.. more over the rules, guidelines defining clear do & don't with acknowledgement of the same by individuals working with this will help on preventing from the same.. Equipments & tools safety should Lso be an integral part of training modules on exchanging the knowledge of hazards & consequence right before deployment is reduce series of injuries..

The good old industry slogan “ hammer for hammer heads tools for technicians “ could be displayed at technical work spaces as a reminder for those who resort to shortcuts . Regular inspection/Audit of tool kits is a fool proof old fashioned way but is a sure shot .

An example that works well is having a comprehensive, fully stocked TOOL CRIB where equipment and tools are checked-out daily. Doing this enables daily inspections, records location , tool condition and forces employee accountability. Plus, unsafe tools are immediately sent to maintenance for repair. Thus employees cannot use faulty tools or equipment.

As the industry tech work environment is mostly under surveillance safety managers should make it point to ensure checks and balances are in place by keeping a proper monitoring/vigil on violators .

Enforcing safety in your organisation is a poor approach. If you need to introduce new procedures, ways of working, or new tasks then work with operations to identify reasonably practicable and operationally pragmatic safety mitigations. Do this before changes and communicate in different ways to operators and reinforce the message. Don't enforce - persuade, cajole, and inspire.
