When I was first assigned to lead a a multi-functional team responsible for external relations, I noticed that the groups within the team were not communicating and collaborating as much as I had hoped. I soon instituted an annual vision and strategy process where every team member was involved. The output was an integrated plan for the team, which I presented to our President. Once our vision and strategy was approved, our team was empowered and every member was acting with purpose for the rest of the year. Since each member was involved with the process, they felt ownership and were motivated by helping shape the direction of the team. Overall, the process increased teamwork, alignment and accountability to our organization.

Your vision has to be more relevant to every step you take as a team. Likewise, every step your team takes and every desired project outcome should lead you towards your vision. Keeping your vision intact always helps keep your team headed in the right direction.

The vision should resonate with the team, spark interest, and motivate them to embrace change. This is one of the factors that strengthen the team's motivation and adaptation.

Don't make it flowery, but realistic and aspirational. The vision should talk about the possibilities and it should be substantiated with a roadmap too.

How does the end-state look like? Then walk back towards the beginning... How will everybody's work change according to this new process? How is the process affecting the Team? What do we need to get the process started? Oh... by the way... don't forget to listen. Your vision is not perfect at all, encourage suggestions and evaluate whether what you are hearing isn't actually a better way to progress on your plan.
