How can you use strategic thinking to manage the risks of investing in a startup founder?

A VC is a VC ultimately because he understands he cannot run and manage multiple business, but would love to work with as many as possible. And as such the founder is the first thing a VC always care about more than the idea or the industry. Now if that founder is deeply ingrained into the industry and is solving a problem that he has been facing day in and day out, that at one point he says “Darn it. I need to solve this s**t or else I am not getting any sleep” that is when you have founder market fit. To put it in a different way Founder Market Fit is when a founders experience, personality and skill converge with the problem he is trying to solve in the market.

In my experience, assessing founder-market fit is crucial and often a predictor of success. A founder who deeply understands the nuances of their market can navigate complexities more effectively. They are typically more adept at identifying unmet needs, which can lead to innovative solutions. In due diligence, I often look for founders who not only understand their market but also display a unique insight or approach that sets them apart. This could be through previous industry experience, an innovative product, or a novel go-to-market strategy. A founder who can articulate a clear vision and how their solution fits into the current and future market landscape is more likely to succeed.

The best way to mitigate this risk in an early stage is by getting to know the founders you are investing in. Really, and I mean REALLY get to know them. VC investments are meant to be long-term partnerships and not just quick cash injections. Understand a founder's motivations and make sure they are clear on why they want to build a company. This will lay a strong foundation.
