How can you use cross-functional teams to boost diversity?

Selecting the right team members for a cross-functional team is crucial to its success. In a previous project, I had the opportunity to handpick team members from different departments with diverse skill sets. By carefully considering each person's expertise, communication style, and ability to collaborate, I was able to create a well-rounded team that complemented each other's strengths. This diverse composition led to creative problem-solving, effective communication, and a high level of synergy within the team.

The success of a team is significantly increased when leadership celebrates the individual talents and knowledge of its team members and provides the challenge and environment which allows each member to contribute and be recognized for their value.

In my experience with building effective cross-functional teams, having the team define a clear purpose and scope is always helpful. Determine the roles and responsibilities for every team member at the kickoff meeting is critical to setting the right expectations around how the team will function and helps to set the stage for how and when the group will interact. It is always valuable to do a face to face kickoff meeting or team building event for members to bond and establish a sense of commitment to each other, the objective, and most importantly the team’s success.

Clearly defining the team's purpose and goals is vital to ensure everyone is on the same page. In a recent project, I facilitated a team workshop where we collectively established the team's purpose, identified specific goals, and outlined the expected outcomes. This exercise helped align the team members' efforts towards a common objective and fostered a shared understanding of the project's direction. Regularly referring back to the established purpose and goals kept the team focused and motivated throughout the project.

Key considerations and skills needed are listening to understand and also giving every team member an opportunity to inject their views/contributions. It is also critical to ensure that the team is a "safe space "where all team members feel valued and respected.

Building a culture of trust and respect is a foundation for a successful cross-functional team. In a particular project, I observed a lack of trust and collaboration between team members due to previous interdepartmental conflicts. To address this, I organized team-building activities, open discussions, and encouraged individual recognition and appreciation. By providing a safe and supportive environment, the team members gradually developed trust, shared knowledge, and became more open to each other's perspectives. This positive team culture ultimately led to improved communication, cooperation, and overall team performance.

For cross-functional teams you need a range of people to add different perspectives, ideas and considerations. Teams designing products, services or systems need to consider all the perspectives, and that comes from involving different people. With a team, it's also crucial to consider different ways of working so that people feel included. Think about how to encourage collaboration and new ideas, how to help people with different ideas to disagree with each other to come to decisions that include everyone, and how to work creatively

The primary goal is to create and attitude of "can-do" verses "thats not my job". Team members embrace change as long as they are a part of the change.
