When you're chatting with community members, pay close attention to their concerns, what gets them excited, and what's important to them. Often, the focus or priority that you go in a community with will change once you listen to them. True community engagement is about a long term commitment that will benefit the community. First hear what they have to say, work to address their most pressing need, and then once their priority is being addressed it will be much easier to introduce your topic.

I met with more than 35000 individuals in community program for last 3 years. One thing I learnt is that community being diverse group of people having different opinions, needs, interests, like and dislike so one needs to be an active listener and listen to the people he/she is pitching to. It will help you put your message more effectively to them and that when they will feel valued for listened they will go along with your message.

It is by listening to the communities we seek to help, that we can best deliver what that community actually needs. In medicine, one of the four pillars of medical ethics is that of Autonomy. According to this principle, we are to allow individuals freedom to make their own decisions. This is purposefully contrary to the paternalistic view that we should determine what should be done for our patients without their input. Similarly in community support, as active listeners, we should honor each community's assessment of what they need and direct our efforts accordingly.

When conducting active listening with a community, it’s better to group them according to some level of commonality. You could use one criteria such as age, sex, religion, sexual orientation, education; or a combination of factors e.g 30-35 year old male college graduates. This homogeneity allows shared experiences and active participation.

When doing this in a community setting, or any for that matter, just be genuine. When done properly misunderstandings and issues are lessened tremendously. Communities appreciate have their needs/wants heard and then eventually turned into action.

Practicing active listening in community outreach is transformative. Before engaging, research the community's background to avoid assumptions. Use non-verbal cues like eye contact and nods to convey genuine interest. Repeat or rephrase their words, ask open-ended questions, and summarize key points to show attentive understanding. In the context of children struggling with reading, incorporate interactive activities like storytelling to better understand their challenges and preferences.

In my experience, getting to know a community in terms of: what they value, how they recognize and collaborate with each other, what they may want or need to develop, or what resources they already use successfully, is to attend a community event, or two, especially community celebrations. Many elements come to life in a celebration: intergenerational and family interactions, sharing of food, recognition of leadership and collective goals or beliefs. These elements are very important to consider when working and collaborating, and especially getting to know a new community. Hosting events, or collaborating upon events to get to know a community is also a nuanced way to welcome people - to learn more from - and about a community.
