Consider localising not just text but also icons to cater to regional idioms. For example, movies are not always associated with a popcorn icon in other countries. Not every country appreciates “hamburger icon” to mean “food”. Also, your dialogue boxes and info widgets should tell you WHY users would use a button and WHAT it does. Merely telling WHAT it does isn’t helpful. Telling users HOW the system does something is useless and overwhelming.

Reducing cognitive load: not stuffing too much functionality in a small place. Prioritize the critical and core functions with the least amount of clicks, navigation and UI elements. Simpler is better here. 2. Provide clear labels, text, aria labels for screen readers follow 3. Keyboard navigation flow must be correct. It’s easier to navigate with keyboard screen readers in this context 4. Prioritize text over color coding or icons to perform actions

Just like the ability to magnify/simplify/adapt your personal computer display - having an option to reduce complexity and increase size and/or contrast in the infotainment screen. In my experience in the appliance domain, 90-something percent of use is to actuate the normal/default function of the system. A simple user interface does not sell washers, but once users get the unit home, what they really want is one big red button that makes the system go (and maybe a small blue button to get to all the bells and whistles they never use).

I would recommend thinking about a feature flag/GUI toggle approach. Common functions are front and center while less used capabilities can be masked via toggle. Some consistent feedback we would get on our infotainment units was that older owners found the Cadillac CUE system overwhelming. One recommendation was to have an easy way to Toggle to a more basic GUI. Climate Control, Radio, Navigation Maps - and then bury the rest. Having this quick and relatively easy to implement strategy in place can address the cognitive load challenge for those facing it while enabling a more rich GUI for those who are tech savvy. Another toggle opportunity is seen in Chinese GUIs which typically are considered cluttered by Western users.

Whenever possible, provide screens oriented to the business processes that the solution solves. Much of the resistance to change in end users is sometimes due to the lack of adequate alignment between the two, lack of automation to support filling out input data, simply by presenting a list of fields to the end user.

Additionally, offering multiple ways to navigate, such as through menus, search functions, and breadcrumb trails, allows users to choose the method that best suits their cognitive needs and preferences.

Considering today's high level of AI hardware tech improvement and accessibility, electronic sensors etc. There are many ways to help people with specific type of disabilities, as an example, browser extension, that allows to scroll through pages, capturing eye or head move and that sort of nature control behaviours. Also, controlling cursors and air gesture movements, such modules or as widget component implementation in web apps, still have some market gaps with certain solutions, that many should take as an opportunity. In conclusion, some information website/portals, should definitely take into consideration and follow compliance standards & regulations.

It is important to test and evaluate your GUI to ensure that it is accessible and usable for users with cognitive impairments. You can conduct usability tests with users who have cognitive impairments to identify any issues with your GUI. You can also use automated testing tools to identify any accessibility issues with your GUI. Once you have identified any issues, you can work to address them and improve the accessibility and usability of your GUI.

One of the things worked well for teams I guide is to bring Accessibility validation into the development itself instead of doing it as an after thought. It does not have to be extensive but having developers go through an automated accessibility test before their code gets delivered into next level goes a long way. This provides a shorter feedback loop for the developers to quickly see what they missed and learn from it before next cycle of delivery.

While automated and tools-based accessibility testing is very important, test using different sections of your user base where possible. Conduct functional accessibility tests with people who have lived experiences with cognitive impairments.

Apart from simple and consistent GUI screens with low cognitive loads, navigation involves the ability to move from one screen to another - this is where it needs to be simple and consistent and by reducing the number of navigational choices to just 3 (progress to the next screen, back to previous screen and return to a home screen) will help those with cognitive challenges. Additionally prompts confirming the navigation choice in the form of sounds and/or text will help build trust with such users.

My understand is: apps should be simple as possible. Clean design, colors to inform the user what is and messages to explain what is going or what app is doing. Include proper sound would help as well. And , as several people said here, test application .

Simplify the GUI is a job that requests skills, deep understanding of the different perceptives or cognitive impairments, experiences, marketing approval. Many time it is something done during the process, not designed for it. It is more difficult to simplify than create a full info GUI.
