How can you identify and mitigate risks when using strategic thinking frameworks?

To understand the context, defining the problem statement is an important step. It helps me to know if the problem is the one discussed or if there is some different problem altogether. I pen down all issues using the MECE(MeSee) framework, i.e. Pen down all matters which are mutually exclusive but collectively exhausting.

Before diving into a strategic thinking framework, it's crucial to grasp the whole picture of your challenge or opportunity. Think of it like understanding the landscape before planning your journey. Consider the key players, trends, and uncertainties swirling around your situation. Understanding your situation guides you to a framework that actually fits. Let's say you're running a small business. Before jumping into a strategic plan, look around. Who are your competitors? What's shaking up the market? Maybe there's a new trend in online sales. Knowing this helps you grab a framework that suits your unique needs.

In my opinion, comprehending the context is foundational to effective risk mitigation. For instance, employing the PESTLE analysis framework helps consider external factors like political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental elements. Understanding these factors sheds light on potential risks and their implications within the strategic landscape.

Identifying and mitigating risks in digital strategy frameworks begins with a deep understanding of the context. This involves analyzing the market, competition, and the latest trends to ensure the chosen framework is relevant. Contextual awareness allows strategists to foresee potential disruptions and prepare accordingly. Incorporating proprietary frameworks tailored to the company’s unique situation enhances this process, providing a structured approach to organize thoughts and strategies. Custom frameworks consider specific business models, market positions, and corporate cultures, leading to more precise risk assessment and strategic planning.

While choosing the strategy framework, you should select the quantitative approach for that framework. For example, if you choose SWOT, the numerical scale should be there to properly analyse your internal(S, W) or external(O, T) capabilities. Numbers should be derived rationally and not based on gut feeling. Then, you can relate your situation or context to the problem by working on your weaknesses, maintaining your strengths, grabbing the opportunity and mitigating threats. Even the problem should be approached with numbers only, as numbers give you a way to measure and control the impact of changes. It seems fair to discard the framework if it is not measurable.

Testing assumptions is key to uncovering hidden risks. During strategy formulation using the Five Whys technique, probing deeper into assumptions uncovers potential risks. For instance, questioning the assumptions underlying a proposed strategy exposes vulnerabilities that might have been overlooked.

We have various tools to mitigate risks while doing strategic management/thinking according to our goals, such as SWOT and stakeholder feedback. Still, one of my favourites is scenario planning. Scenarios are compelling descriptions of possible futures that may not be the most probable but plausible, coherent and substantially different ones.
