As a manager, paying attention to your teams development is fundamental to the success of what you do. Creating personal development plans not only highlights what skills, knowledge, experience and training are required to properly carry out the role, but also highlights the puts the emphasis on the individual to engage in this process as they see the benefits of up-skilling themselves. Create a Personal Development Plan for each of your employees/team members. This process should start with the employee being asked where they see themselves in 3-5 years and then you start mapping out what skills, knowledge experience are missing and what steps you need to take to get them in place. It is basically a continuous process of engagement which can also be used to have micro feedback sessions with each to correct some behaviours or errors that have been observed. The PDP must be owned by the individual but have the full support and involvement of their manager. This then becomes a roadmap to what needs to be done, in what timescales and prepares the person for their next step on their career.

Every employee should know that their development is a must and the bedrock of the team. This is their ticket to advancement and performance. If they have been given the chance and all the opportunities, but do not engage then the outcome is much easier to manage.

The more you engage with your team on their development the more loyalty you breed. People don't go on LinkedIn when they know they are in a place which looks after their development and advancement.
