How can you give credit when citing sources in your stories?

One thing I have read in my schooling as well is that there are various ways to give credits in your writing. > THESE STYLES DEPENDS ON YOUR AUDIENCE. > THESE STYLES ALSO DEPENDS ON THE TYPE OF CONTENT YOU WRITE. Choose your way accordingly:)

When I use information from someone else in my stories, I make sure to say where it came from. I mention the person's name who wrote it, the title of what they wrote, and where it was published. If it's from the internet, I also include the website link. I try to explain the information in my own way, but still keep the main idea the same. This shows respect for the original writer and helps readers find out more about the topic if they want. Giving credit like this makes stories more trustworthy and honest.

That said, in content I write on Linkedin - for example, a piece on how "Genetics improve Muscle Performance", I will add a link to research I did in the comments below my post. This way, my readers will know that my claims come from credible sources.

Provide publication details or hyperlinks when applicable. This not only upholds ethical standards but also enhances the credibility of your work, fostering transparency and trust with your audience.

When incorporating sources, consistency of their representation in your content is key. A citation style will help you to do this, however choosing it should be led by your audience and also the format by which your story is being shared.

1. Use quotation marks: If you copy someone's exact words, put them in quotation marks and mention the source with author, year (and page number if available). 2. Paraphrase and credit: If you use your own words to explain someone else's ideas, still mention the source (author and year). Remember, citing sources shows you respect the work of others and helps your readers learn more!

Remember: when using someone's sentence, provide the reference, and if you're using the exact phrase, enclose it in quotation marks. This is simple to understand, however, it hides a great danger: do not overdo the quotations or phrases from other people in quotation marks. This empties your text too much.

I often use the "according to" or "as [this person] has explained" in my work, and I find it enhances, not detracts from, the ideas I'm presenting. Listeners may respect the source, which can add credibility to my presentation. Citing also is a way to illustrate your own integrity. Moreover, when I introduce an expression or approach I've developed, the audience can feel confident it's my own original thinking - otherwise, I would have attributed it to a particular source. Finally, when citing sources I admire in a keynote speech or on my podcast, I may reach out afterward to the source to let that person know how much I enjoy their work - so much that I highlighted it in my talk or on the podcast, potentially sparking a collaboration.

Incorporate source attributions within the body of your story. For example, 'According to a 2023 report by XYZ Institute...' This method keeps your audience informed about where the information originated. This method is particularly effective in journalistic writing, where mentioning the source can add authority and context.

One method I like to casually do in my articles is praise other articles which I reference, and then use them as a base or foundation for my own article. For example, I'll state "An article by [insert author] depicted this point brilliantly. To expand further, I'd like to argue that xyz." Assuming copyright isn't an issue, I think this is a great way to promote other content as well as use them as a basis of your own.

One of the most useful ways to incorporate external sources into your stories is to bridge, as I call it, the source to your story. Bridging is by where yo are linking the relevance of the source to that particular moment in your story. To do this you have to set the context, your personal reflection on the source and how it has added value to your story. To just drop it in and move on, will disrupt the flow and create a feeling of disjointedness.

Let's face it - 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗿𝘆. That is why to make it more readable, I like to introduce my sources smoothly into the narrative flow. Here is how I do it: 1/ "According to a study by..." - This seamlessly integrates the source while establishing its authority. 2/ "As doctor John Smith notes..." - This personalizes the citation by mentioning the source's name. 3/ "This concept aligns with the ideas presented in..." - This approach shows how your source builds upon your story's themes. To me, citations isn't just technicalities. They can also spark deeper conversations with my readers.

This is the challenge, I find, with ChatGPT. Most of my work requires references. It's one thing for ChatGPT and other LLMs to find "valuable" content ... but then it's always me, not ChatGPT, hunting down the references. This can be more time-consuming than doing the research myself!

Include a comprehensive reference list or bibliography at the end of your story, listing all sources cited within the narrative in alphabetical order by the author's last name. Format the reference list or bibliography according to the guidelines of the chosen citation style, including all necessary bibliographic information for each source.

For me, I think of my reference list as my "Thank You" section at the end of my story. Here, I provide full details of all the sources I've used. This allows my curious readers to go deeper and explore the inspiration behind my work. In fact, many online tools can help us generate reference lists automatically based on our in-text citations. Just make sure the information is accurate and includes details like author(s), publication date, title, publisher, and any relevant website details for online sources. By following these simple steps, we can effortlessly integrate citations into our stories, giving credit where it's due and enriching our content for our readers.

Always ensure that you have this in your work - at the back - and as you build your sooty keep a track (As you go) of any 3rd party sources you are using. I have seen some try to do a run through at the end and miss one or two. Also ensure that your list is well signposted - don't simply list it out. Align it to the location in the story, index it correctly, if there is a digital signpost - then use this in the document so that if the reader wants to explore more of their work then they can.

A great rule of thumb is: If it's already written and published somewhere - anywhere - cite the source. Whether that be a direct citation, a sources cited page at the end of you're writing, etc.

Sometimes you might not even realize what you have written is of issue. Grammarly is a useful tool to check for inadvertent plagarism!

Do not randomly say, "I read it somewhere". - Make effort to define the source - Appreciate sufficiently in your narrative - Be wise to praise the story and the message

If you're unsure about how to cite sources and provide them with credit, you can always refer to resources that outline how to do this. For example, you could refer to something like Purdue OWL. It's also okay to cite your source multiple times, like citing the source when you talk about it in text and noting it again in a bibliography.

If possible, I reach out to the creator and ask directly, this could help to make them feel proud and maybe even establishing a relationship with you for the future.
