How can you effectively evaluate communication training for non-native English speakers?

Clear goals for clear measurement of success. Assessing results doesn't have to sit with a final score. In communication exercises, the result doesn't have to be based around watching how each individual understands a set goal. It can be based on meeting given parameters. like following and giving instructions to a team, enabling them to stack a set of boxes in a particular way, or to solve a series of puzzles. Very much like an escape room. Without a final score, but a clear result that aligns with a statement like 'Without the clear communication between all the team members, they would not have solved the series of puzzles in the given time frame'. That's a result. It's specific, measurable, achieveable, realistic and can be timed

First and foremost keep it simple…have lots of patience and respect the people who are being trained.. let them know they can speak freely, with no judgement. Most importantly make sure the training will be beneficial to them and let them know you will try and answer their questions to the best of your ability. Remember every culture is different. In addition, speaking their language can be a great advantage.

What has worked for me in the past has been to work with these individuals one-on-one to help them improve their ESL communication. However, the labor market is expanding rapidly and one-on-one trainings are not as efficient as they used to be. What your company can do to help make this process more efficient is purchase language learning software: including but not limited to apps such as Rosetta Stone, et. al. In the short term, yes it may not be kind to your profit margins. It's a queen's gambit- the long game is always more fruitful. Paying for these training materials up front will increase revenue and consumer relations for years to come!

Beyond language issues there's sometimes a lack of intercultural knowledge and know-how which can impede effective communication. Becoming familiar with the fundamentals of cultural differences can benefit all parties. Theoretical models such low vs high context cultures would be a good place to start.

Continuous learning is critical when I walk into a classroom with students, I prepare myself to learn. I know that even when I'm delivering the training, I have the opportunity to learn from them. Continuous feedback can be readily gauged by the level of engagement you may get from your students. Getting them to brief what they've learnt can give you an immediate understanding of how they've grasped the subject. Asking them how they found delivering a subject to their peers, gives them an idea of how it is for you, but involves them to the extent that they are truly invested in the result.

First things first. Let go of the assumption that non-English speakers need communication training. Making this assumption can be quite offensive when many of us are fluent in multiple languages. Instead, we should asses who needs assistance in every classroom all the time.

My first language was Welsh my second was English during my younger years. Culturally English was a swift and simple language...Welsh held a deeper social meaning and level of 'class' depending on how you spoke it...and how original your responses were. Nust consider other things that some languages may give a native speaker that English speakers cannot. English has its place in the world as the international language of the air ways...and the language of maritime radio traffic. Other languages can say alot more in fewer words with a far greater meaning. Some languages can't. If you can prove the benefit of a language, for example through play for the younger generation...or better employment for the older generation.
