How can you climb the consulting career ladder?

Understanding your role and its associated expectations is crucial for personal and organizational success. Clear role definition provides clarity on responsibilities, tasks, and performance standards, enabling individuals to focus their efforts and resources effectively. It promotes accountability, as individuals know what is expected of them and can take ownership of their work. Moreover, knowing your role fosters collaboration and synergy within teams, as everyone understands how their contributions fit into the broader objectives of the organization. It also helps in avoiding misunderstandings, conflicts, and duplication of efforts, leading to improved efficiency and productivity.

Know the difference: - Coach: helps you discover you are the answer - Consultant: has the answer and does the work - Advisor: has the answer, you do the work

In order to climb the consulting career ladder, understand where your area of specialization is going. Whether it's in one of the many concentrations of management or technology continue to upskill and look for opportunities to apply your knowledge to gain experience. Understanding where your profession is going and continuing to obtain education in those areas will allow you to always stay current. This will enable you to assist your clients in implementing best practices and up-to-date solutions.

I've been a small business advisor for over 30 years. I've always been a combo of Coach and Consultant. I help clients discover the answer, even when they are part of the problem. But I know many of the answers. Hell, over 30 years I've learned a few things. - Tiny businesses. Their problem is marketing. How to do the work and bring in more clients. - A little larger. Their problem is employees; how to hire, train, and keep them. And get rid of them. - Growing businesses. How to manage growth; esp. when the owner must develop and rely on a top management team. - Growing faster. How to obtain growth financing without losing control. - Ready to go. How to get ready to sell, or groom key people to take over. How to let go.

Define - Ability to define the issues in the organization and business Design - To ideate a conceptual framework to measure impact Develop - To develop some metrics to measure different domains of the organizations Deliver - Ability to deliver training modules to leaders and managers to train them on operationalising conceptual frameworks and how it helps scope, control and measure efficiency and effectiveness.

In my view, it is key to have an attitude of service, of sharing your knowledge and skills with others, in pro of a bigger cause or purpose. The most successful consultants are those that go beyond looking for individual profits, and think beyond in terms of abundance, sharing, and contribution; those who are generous with their time, knowledge and efforts and seek *where they can help* and are proactive to get started.

In my experience, a consultant is the go to person for all queries that the customer has. If you have knowledge about the industry tools and technologies apart from your core skills, it helps in your day-to day delivery as well as builds your reputation both internally and with customers

To be a worthy consultant, you must have at least a decade of experience in an industry vertical. You have to have a demonstrable expertise that can be showcased through case studies wherein you delivered genuine value. You should have a suite of techniques, tools or processes that are of the highest industry standards, which you are an expert in deploying as and when the need arises. You have to have a strong moral and ethical character in order to challenge your own biases and present hard truths when required. Lastly you have to pursue knowledge and excellence continuously. The trust placed on you, as a consultant is sacred and you have to be true to it in the final reckoning.

In my opinion (and I have learnt this the hard way), there is no better way to learn than public speaking. Agreed, it can be daunting at first, but public speaking enhances learning by requiring thorough understanding of a topic, promoting effective communication skills, and boosting confidence. So take every opportunity to 'test and learn' that new skill or topic , use every brown bag session, team meeting, informal lunch room session to speak and see yourself transforming into a respected authority. Learn from every attempt and continue to grow.

In my experience, gain actual real life experience and achieve extraordinary success. People will naturally trust you more when you have experience and a track record of success.

Mirroring is extremely useful and keeps the client engaged and talking. It entails repeating few last words of the last statement and then pausing. You might even call it repetition, but it's different and enables you to find out as much as possible without having to ask. Sometimes, no matter how they are devised, questions encounter (subconscious) resistance. With mirroring, the flow of information is more organic (and therefore can be more insightful because the client isn't thinking about your question, but simply following it's own train of thought).

Effective communication in a consulting role means sharing information that will serve your client and help them reach their objectives and make their personal vision a reality. This can sometimes mean challenging their position or sharing expertise they may not be aware of. Truth telling can be an effective tool for change if done right. As a consultant, you are in a better position to have difficult conversations than long term employees. Don't be afraid to use that. After all, you've been hired to solve a problem and bring forth a transformation.

Having worked in 3 of the largest consulting firms as a Director and Partner, I can say that each ecosystem has a different political structure. Some firms require you to accumulate an actual list of sponsors on your journey to partner - others value tenure most of all - and some care most about your social capital and connections. When you join a Consulting Firm try to understand what components are the key levers to career growth in that ecosystem - and then build your plan of execution to achieve the targets that matter. Ultimately Consulting firms are indeed very hierarchical - in some ways it can feel like a unionized environment- but learning the rules of the career ladder early on? It makes a huge difference

Effective listening help you build trust with the customer very fast. Successful consultants communicate in such a way that shows that they not only understand the problem at hand but also understand the business context of the customer. Effective communication starts with effective listening. Being transparent in communication is another key aspect. Understanding the customer and their background often make communication more effective.

Your network is your net worth... In this business, knowing the right people can really open doors. It's not just about meeting lots of people, but about making connections that count. When you know more people in your field, you learn more, get more ideas, and find more chances to grow in your career.

Finding the sponsor is key, if they are not willing to promote you and your abilities it doesn’t take a mind reader to spot that you career ladder has a few rungs missing. It’s often about who you know and not what you know.

Mentoring needs a structure. Decide if you're meeting weekly, every other week, or monthly. Longer than monthly is too long. Give it 3-4 months then decide about continuing.

Seeking mentoring within a consulting firm is key to gaining security and confidence within your growth in the company. A) Find a mentor you admire B) Let him/her know your strengths and weaknesses C) Make sure he/she believes in your potential. Finally, when choosing a mentor, not only take into account their experience and position in the consulting firm but also think about their network of professional contacts. This can open doors to opportunities that would not otherwise be available.

Search out a mentor, but make sure it’s someone complimentary. Unless you’re searching for someone for pure accountability, that way getting on isn’t so important. I found coaching and mentoring really helpful as it ends up being mutually beneficial. Previous mentors, could unlock unopened opportunities due to their stature or network, the can help you build systems and process to consult better and also are happy to open up their network to help you.

Mentorship is a great way to quickly gain experience and have a different perspective from the way you always think. It is one of the best pieces of advice I give to people when they reach out to me.

Throughout my extensive consulting experience, I've learned that the fifth step to advancing in the consulting career ladder is critical: the demonstration of impact and value to both my firm and clients. Impact, fundamentally, is the tangible difference made through work, while value encompasses the benefits brought to all stakeholders involved. One key aspect of this is the consistent delivery of high-quality work. Whether it's in research, analysis, or strategy development, the aim is to consistently exceed expectations, fostering trust and solidifying the reputation as a reliable consultant. Identifying and resolving issues, even those unforeseen, is viewed as an opportunity to showcase the ability to create value.

This is the most important aspect of consulting. Demonstrating one's impact and value is the first step in a consulting assignment. The key attributes a consultant should have are listening and creating an environment where clients can speak freely. Consultants can learn a great deal about honing these skills from medical practitioners. The best doctors exude openness and warmth which makes patients instantly comfortable in speaking about their health issues. Doctors listen patiently to patients and then start asking pointed questions which helps them arrive at a clear diagnosis. The same strategy needs to be applied for solving problems clients are facing and showing them the potential opportunities their businesses can explore.

In the end, this section summarizes the ultimate deliverable for a consultant. This is how referrals are obtained, repeated business is captured, and the status of Trusted Advisor is earned. However, know the difference between showcasing and haughtiness.

Most effective and genuine consultants/advisors never miss the client's perspective when working on a project. This enables them to deliver best impact and value.

The ability to solve business problems in a cost-effective, time-efficient, and accurate manner will have the greatest impact on clients and bring more value (monetary and brand) to you as a consultant. Everything else normally takes care of itself.

Flexibility is key in getting attuned to the client and its business so as to be able to consult objectively and diligently, but with insider knowledge. The biggest advantage of a quality consultant is deep "in-house" understanding combined with an independent perspective free of internal limiting beliefs and systemic biases.

You need to be much more proactive than your fellow colleagues. Show them you deserve your place and statute. Get involved in the most complicated tasks

One thing that I have found helpful is to maintain a Delivery of Value anchor with each interaction be it with Clients, Business Partners and other team mates. The tech stack and emerging effective practices will change over time. The hope for the delivery of value will stay constant.

As a managing partner of a 100-people law firm I do not necessarily know all junior people. I suggest three step approach for a junior consultant to become visible and valuable: (1) get into consulting engagement with one of senior partners in a firm; (2) make yourself very helpful on that particular project: work longest hours, find information that is hard to find, befriend client’s managers and extract information from them; (3) continue to be very helpful to a senior partner outside of that first project.

Will add the following: 1. seek to build eminence in an area - functional, industry, set of customers with commonality 2. share Point of View and learning summaries on public forums - conferences, LinkedIn, papers 3. after every successful delivery, follow up for incremental sharing and connect with customers - build a client base and that will smooth the career journey 4. Lastly, dont be obsessed with when you will "move up"; focus on skills, learning, customer excellence and presenting your best face forward ... and you will get the "move up" ..you cant time it .. "move up" for me and my better half (a partner in a Big 4) all of a sudden and was the result of doing the things outlined here.

En la consultoría como en cualquier empresa/sector, el ascenso no es solo una cuestión de realizar tareas, conseguir objetivos, tener conocimientos, etc. Es fundamental saber tejerse una red de contactos internos, el networking o lo que en el refranero español viene a decir de: "Más vale caer en gracia, que ser gracioso". Saber "moverse" dentro de la organización, tener habilidades sociales, caer bien a las personas que tienen la última palabra en tu decisión de ascenso es fundamental. Y cuidado, esto no quiere decir que lo otro no sea importante (experiencia, conocimientos, etc.), ni que tengas que ser un "pelota", pero en el ascenso por la escalera, no todo son los resultados y cuanto antes entiendas esto antes ascenderás.🤷

If you're starting out or in the early years of your consultancy career, taking a role at a smaller consultancy will often boost up your experience faster as you're more likely to be "thrown into the deep end" early, getting the hands-on experience that is so important. You are also more likely to have more independence as the team sizes are usually smaller.

Consulting is not a regular job. Consulting is a mindset. Mindset of seeing the problem and finding the solutions. Mindset of creating something new and something better. A real consultant must have eclectic knowledge. Subject matter expertise, human psychology, philosophy and leadership... all combined. Consultant must always crave for knowledge and try to refine his mindset. Consulting means, giving new directions to individual, organisation, society, nation and the world!
