How can you build a coalition of stakeholders to support criminal justice reform?

Build relationships by getting people into a room, enable that space, be flexible. Make sure experience experts are there too. Do not be prescriptive beforehand, philanthropy is not the expert - allow the group to identify their shared values to create the basis for a movement. Resource the movement! Support groups to demonstrate the evidence for change but in the CJS it's often a battle for hearts and minds so focus on the narrative.

While these overarching principles may be (and appear to be) helpful for first steps in any collaboration -- when it comes to reform of the criminal legal system, the first step should always be to consult and consider those most impacted. Defendants are on the front lines--the issues that they care about and which public defenders identify are what should take priority.

Remove "reform" from a political solution. Justice should be equitable, institutional bias must be eliminated and "shareholders" to fix the problems, must be considered, must come from all segments of our society.

The concept of integrity and honesty are the most important values in both professional and personal. The other values like kindness, loyalty and respect are the rest of the ingredients necessary to identify your goals.

The first step should be talking to people who have been impacted by the criminal justice system, and identify any unnecessary pain points. If something in the system is hindering progress of true rehabilitation, then you've found your target. Criminal justice is often administered at a local level, so you need to know what is impacting YOUR community. Once you have a clear target in mind, you can build goals that seek to address the issue(s) in an effective, efficient, and equitable manner.

A great way to do this is to view the Coalitions in PA on the county or State level. See how people from every aspect of the system are involved. Especially elevating the voices of those with lived experience. You can’t bring about any change without these voices present!!!

Know your target audience but also network and collaborate in all arenas. Limitations can stifle otherwise positive opportunities.

Grass roots. Always the best way to get started. Find out which approach is more compatible with your ideas and perspectives.

Conduct thorough research to understand the current state of the criminal justice system in your locality or country. Identify key stakeholders, including government agencies, advocacy groups, legal experts, community organizations, and affected communities. Map out their interests, concerns, and potential allies or opponents.

We need to move forward from administrative committees and discussions of change, to take action toward implementing strategies on the front lines. Getting buy-in from administration is valuable, while it's equally important (if not moreso) to motivate the people who will shift the narrative.

Building relationships across agencies and working hard to include others is not just a means to an end, but an end in itself. By investing in the people and communities most impacted by the criminal justice system, we can create a more just, equitable, and effective system that serves everyone.

I often ask people to simply share their story with me. If they are generous enough to agree then active listening is important as well as finding the common point(s) of passion.

Reach out to stakeholders individually or through targeted outreach events, meetings, or forums. Listen to their perspectives, concerns, and priorities related to criminal justice reform. Build trust and rapport by demonstrating genuine interest in collaboration and understanding of diverse viewpoints. Cultivate relationships based on mutual respect and shared values.

Clearly define the roles and responsibilities of each stakeholder within the coalition. Assign tasks based on expertise, resources, and capacity. Establish mechanisms for communication, decision-making, and conflict resolution. Ensure that everyone understands their contribution to the common goal and feels ownership over the process

The old way is not working. Changing the system from the outside is not working. Reform must be initiated from the inside. From those that have experienced the injustice of our justice system.

It is not enough to have endless meetings, defining roles and setting timelines is the only way to truly collaborate and move towards real progress!

Facilitate regular meetings or working groups to coordinate activities, share updates, and align strategies. Foster collaboration through joint initiatives, campaigns, or advocacy efforts. Leverage the strengths and resources of each stakeholder to maximize impact and reach. Maintain open channels of communication to address challenges and adapt strategies as needed.

Establish metrics and indicators to assess progress towards your goals and evaluate the effectiveness of your coalition's efforts. Regularly review and reflect on your strategies, tactics, and outcomes. Identify lessons learned and best practices to inform future advocacy efforts. Use evaluation findings to refine your approach and continuously improve your coalition's effectiveness.
