You could also have catalog/portfolio available to display it to your client and they can point out what direction they want. If the client says “it’s up to you”, there could be actually the opportunity to be developing a larger scope and showcase your skills not just in photography.

When asking questions and seeking visual examples of the desired look, we can avoid misunderstandings and ensure that the final result aligns with the client's needs. Furthermore, understanding the deliverables, deadlines, and required formats is crucial to ensuring efficient collaboration. I have found it extremely helpful to focus on the client's vision and objective in trusting you to solve their problem. Having that thought sort of redirects efforts and all abilities into a tunnel vision that leads to the client's problem solved.

For my clients, I focus on showing them examples of my style, rather than educating them on how or why I use layers and masks, etc. They hire me to do a job for a reason, and it is my job alone to know how to achieve the looks they want. This removes stress from my clients, so they don't have to worry about editing what I give them. I fully retouch every image that goes out, and I edit based upon my style, plus, the combined vision of my client and myself. Once you have the trust of your clients, you don't need to explain your process. You just need to be able to consistently execute a great product that they know they can rely on.

It is important to communicate your process with the client's problem in mind. This has been helpful as it allows the client to acclimatize their problem and your solution. They will understand what you are doing to solve their problems and grow in their trust.

Explain your style and approaches to photography, a how will it align to the client's vision, discuss the details, composition, focus, light etc use the different tools to connect to the clients ideas but align it to the styles and techniques that you use to.

I only share information about layers, masks, filters, and other aspects with the client when I recognize that they have a specific request that may not yield optimal results or has certain limitations. In such cases, I often record my computer screen to provide a detailed explanation of why I edited the project in a particular way or why alternative approaches may not deliver the desired outcome. This approach has proven to be effective in establishing trust with clients, as they understand that my feedback is based on professional judgment rather than a lack of willingness to accommodate their requests.

I always build in the retouching as a secondary cost in the contract - i.e X cost for the shoot and X cost for basic retouching and if the client needs anything beyond basic color, crop, curves I can look to hire someone else if it's actually faster and there's budget available.

I believe in interactive work with the client. We have to understand each other's words so that we can both be satisfied. There are two ways to receive feedback from customers. 1. Invite your client to be with you for part of the process. 2. We should not leave the customer after the delivery of the order. After three or four days, we can contact him and ask his opinion about the work done. I recently did a photo shoot for a clothing brand. After 4 days, I called the client and asked his opinion about the new photo. I told him what was the feedback of those who saw that photo behind the shop window? One thing I find super helpful is going over the images after the session with my clients. That way they might say ‘hey, can you take out this or that?’ I make a detailed list of what they would like retouched. When I send out the final images, I always make sure they know that if there is something else they would like changed to please let me know. My clients satisfaction is the ultimate goal, I do what they tell me to do.

As a headshot photographer, the retouching in the photos I take needs to be authentic to the person. Therefore, I will never do any crazy filters, or do too much retouching to make the person look other than they really are. It’s important in today’s world that your picture actually looks like you and not an overly retouched image. That being said, I will consult with my clients as to things that they do want removed or not removed in their image. For example, some people would like to have a scar removed or a mole removed, while other people do not want those removed. the goal is to have an image that is retouched without looking retouched.

As a professional photographer, I personally edit every image I take. By maintaining control of the edits, I can easily achieve my and my client's vision for a session. Mostly, because I shoot purposely for a session, and try to achieve the majority of what I want in an image when I actually click to take the image. For some, I will purposely underexpose or overexpose, or drag a shutter. There are many ways that I achieve a certain look, and it is not at all left to the editing. Most of my images look very much like they do when they come straight out of the camera. Unless my profession was that of a retoucher, I would personally never edit another photographer's image.

I never approach a shoot thinking "well I can always just fix this in post." I try to get the best image possible in-camera. As I've gotten more experience behind the camera I have also developed a lighter hand when editing.

Acredito que toda relacionamento profissional/cliente deve ser embasado nesse princípio, principalmente da nossa parte. I have always personally tried to follow this rule whenever it comes around feedback and that is being like water when you are receiving feedback and don’t take anything personally. Most often we do this mistake where we take feedback personally as if the client is questioning our experience and learning over the years but the only perspective that one should have is “be in the moment”. Just like life, sometime paying focus to what is happening right infront of you is important and that is what the client thinks. It knows its audience is taking a best guess of what would work so always try to incorporate things that clients ask for but do add your extra flair in the same to let everyone remember it is your work.

The biggest strength as a business owner is receiving feedback from a client. As a professional, the best way to grow and to learn are from the positives and negatives that come from running a service based business. Staying professional and keeping your integrity in the forefront of what you do will always yield respectful and appreciative clients.

A lot of this should be handled in pre production. In a lot of cases the client is coming to you because they think you can deliver on their creative concept (sometimes you even get some more say in that depending on the size of the client). But, in pre-production you should be convincing your client how you are going to shoot their job by infusing your style into the creative direction. And then when you are on set it’s all about collaborating with the creative team, executing the concept, and delivering photos that you and the client are happy with!

Communication & LISTENING are your best friends when dealing with retouch projects. I always like to talk to the client first and get a good feel of the person and their intentions. Although not always possible, I find it best to sit and work with them beside you so they can steer you in the right direction. Clients LOVE choices and samples- so give them a few ideas to choose from. Empathy is key. Make sure to get feedback so you can better yourself in the process.

One of the most important lessons that I have learned about retouching is always show the client you retouched images for them to get a sense of how images are when delivered. Also ask whether to remove anything from the face before completely retouching the image and you may hide a beauty spot or scar that the client did not want to remove
