While working on a project as a temporary contractor, it's in your best interest to act as if you're a full-time permanent employee for several reasons. I know it's popular to always be looking for "What's in it for me?" However, I would challenge that notion and suggest sometimes freely giving of your services. This one act of generosity could propel your business into the stratosphere! I'm not suggesting giving all your talent away, but deliver such valued content that people gravitate toward you as a chosen expert. The $ will come!

There was a time where employees are valued by employers for staying loyal and worked till their retirement age. At current changing working landscape, this career strategy is not workable or beneficial to both employers and employees alike. You have to be your own career strategist or CEO. If you want to know where your work interests and passions lie, working in a gig economy may not be a bad idea at all. It could lead you to a working path that meets your personal and financial needs sooner and not later in life.

In my experience, temporary and contract work often takes you out of your comfort zone and gets you to do things that you may not normally do. When you do your regular consulting assignments they are usually in an area of your core expertise, with clients that you are either familiar with or who have heard about you. In a temporary work this does not hold good and more often than not you have to start afresh. I find this builds skills and expertise in areas that I may not necessarily have deep expertise in. Also, having to learn, makes the opportunity that much more rewarding. Besides consulting is all about learning and growing.

I would say the trickiest part of being a contract worker in the events business is balancing the timeline between completing the current project and shaking the trees for the next one. Usually, the time to line up a new assignment is when the current project is reaching its climax and peak workload. Nobody wants to emerge from one project with nothing waiting in the wings (unless it’s a planned break) so striking this balance is a critical piece of life as a contractor.
