For me the key is to avoid considering yourself a supervisor of the team, even though a good PM will emphasize their personal accountability. I wish folk would drop the word Manager (Coordinator? Sensei?). Generally, the team members are the experts and you are primarily a facilitator, administrator, conflict resolution catalyst and manager ("manage" makes sense to me here!) of upward metrics, feedback, and communication to those that truly should be "leading" the project. Consequently, LISTENING to leadership and LISTENING to the team is very important. It happens to be one of the most critical traits of a good developer as well!

It is a well known saying that project management is nothing but dependency management. Identify the critical and major dependencies affecting the deliverables within timelines and plan to manage them effectively. I always think the difference between a software manager and software developer is the numbers of meetings you need to attend and the number of people you need to talk to. Software manager needs to go to more meetings and talk to more people. They talk to humans more than machines. So to transit into a manager role, get comfortable with talking with humans. Be more sensitive because humans are more sensitive than machines and they will not feedback directly to you when you are wrong. Output from humans are not as predictable as machines, so get use to ambiguity.

This effectively means that a project manager does more than "manage" projects, but is also a mix of technical architect, coach and agony aunt to the team. As a project manager, you may not be good at some or all of these roles; in any case, effective communication with the team is the key. Be open and willing to hear bad news. That way you will hear it sooner and have enough time to collectively decide the best course of action. Don't kill the messenger and be fair to everyone in the team. This is the most effective communication.

Here's what I did to embrace change moving from developer to project manager: I started with small team lead roles on short projects. Sought mentorship from our senior PM, learning over coffee breaks. Made a point to learn something new daily - team dynamics, planning tools, you name it. Reminded myself that discomfort meant growth. Stayed flexible and open-minded. Treated every challenge as a learning chance. The key was adapting constantly and keeping my dev mindset while growing leadership skills.

This is quite significant change involving a whole new set of capabilities to master... Make sure, you understand well your motivation. As previous comments correctly warned, it is going to be a journey out of your comfort zone: - you will no longer receive the task for development -> you have to organize works to create those tasks - you will not interract with your team lead only - you will be exposed to mamy stakeholders, and not all of them will share the same motivation and oponion - you will no longer have complete control over your work - you will work hard, but result will be satisfing only in case others do their work well... etc... and this is where it comes to the point, that you need to keep motivated :)

Most program managers would appreciate someone on the team stepping up to help with project management. You can start by being helpful. Consider joining the PMI (Project Management Institute) and getting a PMP. You’ll learn skills and build a network of other project managers. Also consider becoming a CSM (Certified Scrum Master). This combination opens a lot of doors for job interviews as a project manager.

Best practices include brainstorming with the entire team on what would be an impediment factor for meeting commitments from each team member which might surprise as a risk which was not thought by PMs. Also, it is the team which will identify risk mitigation thereby establishing a robust risk management.

Three important factors for becoming a software project manager: #1. Assessment of uncertainty and providing time and budget for the tasks with uncertain outcomes. #2. Have clarity on which decisions can be reversed easily at low cost and which decisions will be difficult and expensive to reverse. #3. Develop skills to understand the concerns of multiple stakeholders and also effectively communicate your viewpoints to them (project sponsor, end users, development and deployment teams). Make sure #1 and #2 are an important part of your discussions with stakeholders.
