Here's how you can set performance goals in a sustainability career.

If you are in a leadership position where you can set goals then you have to be 'genuine'. Your values, enterprise values and those associated with sustainability have to align. As an individual you have to 'walk the talk' - demonstrate commitment. Aligning sustainability with the the 'enterprise strategy' is a must and may take a compelling argument - with repeated explanation (the 'why'). I see UK's macro challenges as economic recovery, energy security and climate change. These 3 challenges overlap and can often be in competition for resources. Maximising the overlap is what motivates me. Thus far Sellafield Ltd has reduced its carbon footprint by 160k tonnes of carbon whilst maintaining wider business performance - win/win.

After 3 decades of working on the imperative of achieving I came to the conclusion that there can be no sustainable development unless humans, the root cause of unsustainability, adopt and live sustainable humane lifestyles in harmony with Nature. And that needs aligning our personal values ~ our inherent wisdom with professional goals. In my case I made a professional decision to establish a holistic wellness and sustainable lifestyle resort in harmony with Nature. Without exception we have success in helping guests to transform their modern lifestyles of materialism, greed, power and waste into sustainable responsible lifestyles in harmony.

Professional career typically spans for 30 years. Focal point in value system keeps changing every 8 to 10 years. Therefore, aligning sustainabiliy value system with KPIs may need midway course correction. Depending upon the industry sector and scale, which of the three dimensions of ESG viz. Environmental, Social and Governance will be more 'Material' will be decided. This should help in Balanced Score Card and Playbook planning for sustainability professionals.

I agree in terms of KPI you can measure . SMART goals and quantitative on the one hand an qualitative on the other hand. Often it needs an approach top down for example to align on (SBTI) to meet the 1,5° target or it depends on bottom up targets built on the view of teams and reporting lines to meet the overarching common goals.

Sustainability space is evolving at a rapid pace and part of it is driven by business dynamics. What worked for corporates a decade back is no longer sufficient. To be able to stay relevant, one has to invest quality time in understanding emerging topics and build informed opinions. Concepts like greenwashing, double materiality and planetary boundaries have been there for quite some time but the dynamics continue to evolve. At the same time, new themes like green hushing, regulatory convergence are emerging. Building interfaces with various business functions and understanding the relevance for each helps in embedding sustainability culture. Continuous learning is not just a empty slogan, in sustainability you will find that the standards, benchmarks, and challenges are constantly changing. Always keep your glass empty when you find new things but also keep critical and logical in dealing with new things.

From my perspective, collaboration in sustainability is a must as sustainability involves many personnel from different experience and education, and if you are in a company that have sustainability goals-then you will not and could not escape collaboration with various departments and divisions. These collaboration is also involving numerous employees from various levels. Getting your sustainability target will doomed to oblivion if you are not collaborating with almost everyone. Collaboration means that you will doubled-tripled-quadrupled ideas for sustainability initiatives and also tackling challenges.

Collaboration is a key for successful career - in fact in any domain. Collaborative approach towards Sustainability helps in adding a quantifiable value to the balance sheet. Isolated work often results in failures, as the RACI matrix might not hold true beyond document.

A crucial key to achieve success and align with needs of future is to monitor progress and take up mapping of sustainability progress with international standards and sectoral requirements. The intent should be to take up rightful and transparent disclosures and evolve along with best management practices

By assessing progress and adjusting strategies, I ensure relevance and effectiveness in my initiatives. My recommendation is to focus on setting actionable KPI's which are quantifiable. Also have moonshot goals. Your long term targets should be broken down into milestones and achieving these milestones should be incentivized.
