Here's how you can navigate resistance from your boss during a change initiative.

One thing I have found helpful is to keep focus on the vision for what the change will bring and gain alignment on the benefit that will bring to the business. Enrolling everyone( above, sideways and down) in the vision and the benefit can help ground discussion of how to implement the change.

Provide Evidence and Data: Always leveraging evidence and data it helps to back up your arguments with that support the need for change and what the value would be added/resulted out of the change. 5. Seek Support from Allies. 6. Be Patient and Persistent: You need allways to remember in such situations being patient and Keep maintainig the lines of communication to be open, address concerns as they arise, and continue to advocate for the change while respecting your boss's perspective. 7. Focus on adressing the Positive things.

It generally needs to start with a business case and some type of return on investment whether financial or people related. As part of the initiative a good communication plan must be developed to address various stakeholder groups. Communication must continue throughout the initiative and progress measured and reported to keep the momentum.

Change management is always a difficult topic at every level. For a team leader (or anyone) I have personally addressed The WHAT? - What is going to change and where should he notice it exactly and the measure of success The WHY? - Why is it important for the organization. What exactly is the benefit with the change. The HOW? - How do we plan to do the change management (communication, training plan etc) Generally if you are spot on with this, the challenges are fewer. Then the most important part (and the difficult part) is how it can be made "personal" for him. To show that the success of change is impacting his performance as a leader.

Become a boss or change your boss….

Understand how your manager communicates and manages in order to frame the change in a way that will resonate with them. For example, if the manager is analytical, focus on numbers; and if the manager is relationship oriented, focus on people stories. Note to include all elements, it's the ratio and order that will change. It's also good to talk about the benefits at multiple levels - for them, for the team, for the business, for the customers.

In my experience, the most effective way is to analyze meticulously the change first and then to approach each stakeholder separately, considering his management style and professional values. There are several frameworks, for example the one called PAEI (Producer, Administrator, Enterpreneur, Integrator) by Adizes Institute. Deep understanding of person’s values and needs and course of action helps not only to choose the personalized communication style, but provides with a new vision on risks and barriers of a new change, benefits and ultimate goals behind them. Once the full picture of the change from various points of view is analyzed, you can approach any stakeholders in future using the prepared communication styles.

Ask your boss about what points of pain she/he sees with a change intiative. Ask what do they think is trying to be done with the initiative. Finally, ask if they think some outlined plan for the team from you can help.

Being a Change Team Lead in my career, I found out that effective communication solves a load of resistance both at the floor level and and at superior level. At the Boss level, the benefits of the change management should be communicated, drawing out the benefit of either the throw out from the need assessment for him/her to change the process he /she adhered to, or to bring out vividly the benefit of changing to a role which he/she might have perceive as downgrading. The key issue is to ensure that one communicates the cost and benefit of accepting the change that might be affecting old processes, to become agile or moving to either a lower or upper step to become more focus and more rewarding/job satisfaction

One way change can be be implemented is to make sure your manager is on the same page as you are. This can be done through one on one meetings (or series of meetings) with the manager where related examples and data can substantiate the ask. Tactfully communicating the benefits derived from the proposed change which can be sustainable in nature and for overall organisational benefit could help in obtaining sign off from your manager

This is really critical as I have found it far easier to talk about an idea than to put a plan together that can work. Make sure a realistic plan is in hand with identified resources that can do the actual change work side by side either their full time jobs. It’s much better for your career to show a fully empowered effort to make the change.

It can be intimidating to admit infront of a larger group that you do not feel comfortable with the change, so offering personal sparring or small group discussions with change coaches can be effective

This is so important and often you are dealing with senior leadership who may have an operational but not change background and this requires different skills. Individual approaches are needed depending on the personality of your boss. Some will be open to coaching and training to support them, in my experience many won’t so it takes a more subtle coaching approach where you address small things to incrementally build change skills (e.g. just explaining how a message will land if delivered in a certain format or style).

Change can be intimidating, so offer your boss reassurance by: - outlining the support structures in place. - Training - providing resources - provide a clear roadmap / rollout plan - use case studies - listen and communicate effectively

Communiquer, partager les succès, comme les échecs et les leçons apprises à travers l’organisation pour inspirer et motiver. En prenant le temps de cultiver l'apprentissage et la valorisation, le changement sera plus doux et plus durable.

It has to become a natural reflex! Never build an argument without allies - people in the team who can testify from their own experience. The most effective way is to make your boss believe that the idea comes from him! It's frighteningly effective!

Gran parte de tu tiempo debe estar orientado a encontrar aquellos lideres informales que mueven la organización. I would be sensitive to your boss' reaction here. You may consider letting them know that you want to talk to your team members before doing so beforehand. It's important that your boss understands your intent before they start getting second hand reports on your conversations. When you do begin building your coalition, I would also think through the nature of some of your relationships. It may make more sense for a colleague of yours to bring someone on board rather than yourself.

Some suggestions includes: Equiping your boss with comprehensive data and analytics related to the change initiative. Present detailed reports, projections, and case studies that clearly illustrate the potential benefits and risks. Implementing a recognized change management framework, such as Kotter’s 8-Step Process or ADKAR, and involve your boss in each phase. This structured approach provides a clear roadmap. Emphasizing how the change initiative aligns with long-term strategic goals and competitive positioning of the organization. Show how change supports the broader vision and mission, making it a strategic necessity rather than an optional endeavor.

First, keep your boss updated on the case, including key points of discussion or argument. Advocate effectively for the proposed position with sound reasoning. If your arguments are not sufficient, ask for the opportunity to refine them. Engage your boss and make them feel part of the discussion and decision-making process. This should strengthen your case.

Including your boss or clients in fleshing out an idea or program for change creates buy-in. Bring them along with you, starting with the context (change drivers, research, EQ). Leave some gaps for others to fill in, and soon they’ll feel ownership. It’s a mindset change from a “tie a bow on it” bullet-proof proposal or product. It helps you to course correct early! I’ve found “Flawless Consulting” extremely helpful, with chapters on resistance and how to clearly and kindly draw appropriate boundaries so that your boss or client (and proxies) will pick up ownership and responsibility for enacting the program of change, even after your job is done. What’s the saying, you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink?😉

Confidence in positive outcome and faith that the change is for the better of the organization are indispensable for a change manager. A lot of fears and the mistakes of the past of the people involved in the process have to be surpassed, and the change manager should provide constant support, demonstrate professionalism to manage the challenges and firm belief that it is all worth it. No matter what risk analysis shows, to some extent it comes to individual belief and commitment of every person to trust the process and join this path with a change manager.

Embrace a growth mindset. Approach the change as an opportunity for learning and development, rather than a threat. Build your support network. Identify allies for advice and practical assistance. Manage your emotions. Communicate effectively. Proactively share information, solicit input, and address concerns. Break down the change into smaller, more manageable steps. . Stay focused on the end goal. Foster culture of resilience. Encourage your team to view setbacks as learning opportunities. By cultivating a resilient mindset, building a support network, communicating transparently, you can navigate the challenges of change and emerge stronger on the other side. Resilience is key to driving lasting, successful transformation.

La paciencia y el autocontrol son herramientas para enfrentar situaciones complejas y su aplicación fortalece estas áreas para cambios presentes o futuros. Puede suceder que a un superior se le deba invertir tiempo y recursos ara fortalecer o mejorar una debilidad en conocimientos o habilidades blandas, iniciar este tipo de acciones es una decisión que se debe evaluar con atención, calculando el beneficio futuro del equipo y el individual del que inicie esta acción.

No esperar el camino unívoco y perfecto. El cambio es siempre un proceso en el que se aprende y desaprende constantemente. Sostener la mirada en el objetivo final, mientras se gestiona en el día a día, es fundamental para no perder el rumbo ni desanimarse.

Assuming all the other necessary actions have been taken care of and if the boss is still resistant, there could be more reasons which one need to think through: 1. probably a big picture that you may be failing to see what your manager is concerned about! Understand the reason with an intention of understanding and not to drive your agenda at any cost! 2. There could be a trust issue, maybe your boss doesn't trust you when it comes to managing & implementing a Change! 3. the boss does not see the need for a change! misalignment! Whatever the reason may be, the basic is to understand the reason for the misalignment between you and the boss before going ahead with the change initiative.

One thing I would caution is to never accept a neutral position from a boss or project sponsor as support or acceptance. It is called passive resistance and can bite you later when this leader quietly (or not so quietly) lets the project fail or reverses the change later.

Ce qui m’aide vraiment beaucoup pour obtenir l’adhésion des dirigeants est de tenter de me mettre à leur place des le début d’un sujet. Pour ce faire, je me pose les questions suivantes : - est ce que c’est réaliste ? - est ce que c’est en ligne avec les objectifs stratégiques de l’entreprise ? - quel sera l’impact précis sur le résultat opérationnel et le bilan de l’entreprise (finance) ? - quel sera l’impact sur les équipes ? - en quoi le monde d’après sera significativement meilleur pour l’entreprise que le monde d’avant ? - que se passerait il si je ne le fais pas ? Si j’ai une réponse factuelle et complète à toutes ces questions, je sais que je peux généralement compter sur le support total de la direction !

In my experience, it’s critical to make sure that all key stakeholders are aligned on projects and transformation, especially one’s boss. Allowing for involvement and co-creation in the alignment process from the get go at each stage of the journey - from brief including scope, to discovery workshops, what great looks like, collation of fact bases, scenarios, invention, implementation, evaluation and so on. Make sure the team and one’s boss is engaged and feel part of the journey and process. Allow them to contribute, to challenge, to give ideas and to co-own the journey. Also workshop based facilitated processes work really well and even allow for team-building and transformation on the journey.
