ABssically, is it good to have diverse asset class, in term of business model, market and geographic area. But it mean than teh VC need to be expert in seveal area around the world, with a real agilitty. easy to do for classical business model, but when you invest in very innovative field (AI, Biotech, others,..) the expertise is a must to have, and you can't be an expert in several topics. So you need to have a real active network in the related fields

Although I very much agree with the importance of diversification from an overall portfolio construction standpoint, venture capital calls for a high conviction in certain markets and industry/vertical trends. Even sector-agnostic funds have preferences, and we can see a certain "theme" for different vintages.

Exit Strategy -- When to Sell? People often ask me questions about future events, as if we had a crystal ball. We do not. My response, "The prediction business is a very tough business." Basically, you sell when the reasons you bought no longer exist. When we invested in Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) 25 years ago we believed they would be the dominant robotic medical device company having the relevant patents, sector leadership with revenue streams from sales, service, parts and upgrades. The installed base with thousands of hours of training & inventory cost solidified customer commitment. We never sold. We bought Boeing (BA) believing it was an important company that would turn around. When we realized the problems ran deeper, we sold.

Venture capital funds invest to divest. Funds operate on specified mid term divestment periods and have to achieve relatively quick exits not only to return value to the investors but to surpass hurdle rates for carried interest beneficiaries. Having a clear strategy starting with correct election of target start ups, proper development of their business plan and connections with private equity funds and other potential acquirers are important for a successful VC manager.

Just like networking is Important to build a deal pipeline and fund raising. Likewise it’s also critical to be both flexible and using one’s network for a profitable exit. I think apart from IPO (which is like a VCs dream) one needs to have a vision for a likely exit targets (PE or Corporates). Key is to plan quite early and move quickly when the opportunity is provided.

VC is just balance sheet 'paper gains' if there is no liquidity. Start with the end in mind. A VC's most valuable ICP (Ideal customer persona) is not a unicorn startup founder that has majority equity. It's actually the M&A advisor of the company that you will exit the portco to. The 'white-spaces' where your portfolio companies fill and grow into is a dynamic space. Make sure that you have the right market advisors to help you build and execute your exit strategy into this opportunity and that the right exit partners notice your efforts so you have multiple offer letters when the time to exit is right.

African VC is nascant. We are still learning if the model is unicorns or camels, swing for home runs or build batting averages and getting comfort if big misses are features or bugs. Change your model. There is a new kid in town which is called Venture Studio which delivers better returns since a Studio is much more hands-on model. Failure rates will be lower, multiples will be higher but operational costs will increase as well.
