I feel you need 2 basic things: First is what does the current products do well and do poorly? Second how does the consumer rank those attributes? Maybe some attributes which do well are insignificant and some which do poorly are needed. The only way to do this is talking with consumers. Doing them in the lab cannot overcome what the consumer wants.

Costs aren't just the design and development work, they're also things like infrastructure and post-launch costs that show up in updates to documentation, communications to users, and support volume. A valuable new feature that's hard to use will struggle to realize its ROI potential due to these costs. This brings me to a part of ROI that's often glossed over: "interaction ROI." Users need to feel the time and effort of each interaction are justified, or that the "juice is worth the squeeze." Getting this right requires designers to look at both sides of the equation. Make your oranges easier to squeeze or use your business acumen to make your juice more valuable.

What are the new trends in your industry? Are there any disruptive or emerging technologies which will change the way your users work, or what your product needs to do -- or how it should work? Experiment with new ideas. Don't be afraid to build a POC and throw it away. Iterate on good ideas. Learn from your team, and share in the success.

For example, AI per se is not a new innovation but just possible now due to intersection of vast data and vast computing power, both of which have been brewing for long time but have matured enough to allow machines to mimic human mind.
