Don't be afraid to pull on the high vis vest and boots and go and see that mine site/project/factory or whatever business looks like for your internal clients. You need to think commercially. It’s easy to get caught up with all the accounting standards out there and spend time on book-keeping which has low strategic value. You need to be a commercially driven finance professional and be a business enabler rather than just being a bean-counter. Your business acumen and strong finance foundation will set you apart.

My approach might be less conventional but i’d say start to take on the role you want to be promoted into ie if you want to be a client relationship manager, ask managers if you can look after some clients and prove you can do the role first. Become great at it, put in the hours (overtime if necessary), always deliver and then after 6-9months have a review and demand to be promoted. There are no handouts in the world of business, we must demand and take what we feel we deserve but not before demonstrating our skills first. Then if they say no, take that experience to another firm, applying for the role you was refused. Simple as that really.
