I began my higher education career when a colleague mentioned their instructor quit mid-semester. I was hired as an adjunct due to my programming background, not my business degree. Many technical and two-year colleagues recognize industry expertise. Universities hire adjuncts with professional experience; you teach while staying in your position. Enhance your marketability by attending conferences and workshops while earning certifications. We always need Subject Matter Experts (SME) for course and program creation. I use professionals on advisory boards to ensure course content is relevant. SMEs can help with research, contribute to academic journals, and present at conferences. It's completely true that doing a Ph.D. offers much more than just the knowledge you gain from books and literature. The process also helps you develop a variety of valuable skills. Critical thinking skills are also honed, enabling you to analyze and evaluate information rigorously. Additionally, a Ph.D. often enhances your research skills, teaches you how to manage large projects, and helps you become adept at communicating your findings effectively.

In my experience, people in higher education are open to hiring individuals from non-traditional backgrounds. However, they want to understand your motivation behind the change, how you feel this pivot will help you meet your professional goals, and the transferrable skills you bring. One note of caution, don't oversell or undersell what you know when seeking to pivot. Also, share quantifiable information when able. For example, sharing that you conduct weekly training sessions for "x" people helps me understand your skill, not just your job, especially if supported by a solid cover letter with your goals.

Every job you are looking for has specific skills that are more highly rated than others. So, you need to change your information and your story accordingly. Resumes and cover letters are stories about you. They address how you can solve employers problems. They want to hear how you have solved previous employers' problems. How can you take charge?

Networking strategically involves intentional relationship-building to advance your goals. Start by identifying key individuals in your field. Research their work, understand their interests, and find common ground. Attend relevant events and engage genuinely—ask insightful questions and share your perspectives. Use social media platforms like LinkedIn to connect and follow up with new contacts. Offer value, such as sharing resources or introducing them to other professionals. Maintain relationships by staying in touch periodically. Be authentic and patient, as meaningful connections develop over time and require mutual trust and benefit. Networking is not just about taking but also about giving.

Explain how that taught you to be adaptable and flexible to put yourself into those different roles. To have multiple jobs in highly different areas, you have to be adaptable and flexible. We may assume that employers know that. But, really, why should they? Explain it to them. Also, having multiple jobs in highly different areas shows how you can adapt even common skills in very different ways. This provides for more scope and understanding on your part to then apply it in even more ways in the new company.

The role for Higher Education positions requires one to have a research acumen; to know how to ignite the students curiosity, fostering best practices, critical thinking skills, time management, self-reflection, leadership and continuous professional development. Networking and collaborating with universities creates an ecosystem, fostering best practices, research collaboration and shared goals.

Make sure you understand, as much as possible, what you're getting into - especially if you are coming from industry. Higher Education is an amazing field but it also has some unique aspects. Talk to people (if possible) who are in the field that is of interest to you. Take into consideration if you are seeking work in a private or public institution. Consider the cyclical nature of the position (i.e., some roles will find it difficult to take leave depending on the time of year). Perhaps most importantly though, think about the primary group you will be serving. Is the role student facing, faculty facing, leadership facing, etc. Once you determine your primary constituent, make sure you feel that you will thrive while working with them.
