One thing I’ve found helpful is to take time to check in with yourself, reconnect to your emotions and processing them. Self management, managing relationships through actively listening and staying unbias, self and social awareness should be fostered behaviours in everyday life. I believe by being aware of your emotions, strengths and weaknesses, and having empathy towards others will make building relationships easier. Approachability is key!

The first thing is to see the struggle in another human being. Secondly actively listen. Place yourself in their shoes and relate to how that struggle might be recognized by yourself. Embrace your vulnerability. Thirdly express empathy verbally. The exploration of new perspectives will help you understand the situation better, and in return change the way you approach any challenge in life. Empathy nurtures trust in any relationship, both personal and professional. In other words, treat anyone in a way that you would want to be treated.

This is a great example of practice what you preach. The proof is in the pudding at the end of the day. Introspection is the only way to get a true concept of how a situation should be dealt with, considering your own emotions in the same situation. One can not expect calmness from fellow seamen if the captain only focuses on the storm ahead.
