You’re working with physicians and need to innovate. How can you build a network of innovators?

1 Find your innovators

In order to build a network of innovators, the first step is to locate them. Start by looking through your own organization or network and asking yourself who the early adopters of new technologies, methods, or practices are, as well as who the thought leaders or influencers are who publish, speak, or teach about innovation. Additionally, consider who the problem solvers or creative thinkers are who come up with novel ideas or solutions, and who the collaborators or connectors are who initiate or participate in cross-disciplinary projects or partnerships. Furthermore, look beyond your immediate circle by following relevant blogs, podcasts, newsletters, social media accounts, or online communities that focus on innovation in your field. Moreover, you can attend events, webinars, workshops, or conferences to meet and learn from other innovators.

2 Reach out to your innovators

Once you have a list of potential innovators, you need to reach out to them and start building relationships. To do this, you should send a personalized email or message expressing your interest in their work and inviting them to connect. You can also ask for an introduction from a mutual contact or colleague, offer to help with a challenge or project they are working on, share valuable information or resources that can benefit them, and invite them to join or attend a relevant event. It's important to be genuine, respectful, and helpful when reaching out, and not be pushy, spammy, or self-promotional. Be patient and persistent in following up until you establish a rapport.

3 Collaborate with your innovators

The final step to building a network of innovators is to collaborate with them on meaningful projects or initiatives that can generate value for both parties and the wider community. You can do this by proposing joint ventures, partnerships, or co-creation opportunities that align with shared interests, goals, or values. Additionally, you can join or form a team, committee, or coalition to tackle a specific problem, issue, or opportunity in your field. Participating in or leading a challenge, hackathon, or competition that invites innovative ideas or solutions from different perspectives is also an option. Furthermore, you can contribute to or co-author a publication, presentation, or course that showcases your expertise, insights, and results. Lastly, recognize and celebrate your innovators' achievements and successes and acknowledge their contributions to your network. It is important to be proactive, flexible, and open-minded when working with innovators and show that you are willing to share, learn, and grow with them. Don't be afraid to experiment, fail, or iterate; instead be creative, curious, and courageous while embracing the diversity and dynamism of your network.
