Consider how your data will be handled by 3rd parties; especially sensitive data. We often get caught in inward thinking and miss the fact that we’re heavily reliant on external parties (vendors, contractors, supply chain partners) to deliver our goods and services. If you’re not securing your documents/emails and being intentional about how they’re being handled by these external parties, you’re likely out of compliance and certainly at the mercy of their teams to secure your data.

AI tools may not be the silver bullet as sometimes promised. First, developers of such tools are often not forthcoming in explaining how these tools were designed, trained and how they work beyond very high-level explanations. Considering many of these tools process personal data, certain transparency obligations must be met. Secondly, organizations must provide adequate resources for the implementation and the expansion of the technology to avoid disruptions to the business. While some promise their technology can easily and seamlessly be implemented, this is not always the case. Without proper investment from the forefront, they can lead to numerous false positives or mischaracterize events which will distract cybersecurity experts.

From a legal perspective, you can’t fall into these pitfalls… Now I recognize that was dramatic but think about what the pitfalls can be with respect to utilizing AI in a cybersecurity context. For example, take privacy concerns where AI needs to utilize a vast amount of data (store it, collect it, etc.) and then the over reliance on AI, which can lead to bias and gaps in cybersecurity defense. AI regulations and data protection regulations are moving parallel and it feels like they are trying to one up each other. Data is key here and both cybersecurity and AI require access to it. So it’s important to have discussions on risk management from the beginning. This requires a lot of foresight and ambition but at least do an initial audit.

That's not to say tools are bad - I work closely with many trusted vendors. The key, though, is having the right foundation in place before you starting buying new AI-specific software tools. Before you start on that journey, though, make sure you've clarified: - Compliance, regulatory, and contractual obligations - Your business objectives for AI - Security requirements - Risk appetite - Threats

Becoming AI literate is a necessary skill in today's world. Find out how machine learning works and its basic concepts and what use cases are applicable for cybersecurity I would recommend working on a few cybersecurity projects using basic ML libraries as that will greatly increase your exposure to AI and give you hands on knowledge. Too often it gets dragged down into a discussion on concepts without enough practical experience

IMHO, avoiding pitfalls hinges on understanding the data intricately. Data classification is key. By categorizing data accurately, AI can discern patterns effectively, enhancing threat detection. As others have mentioned, and can’t be reiterated enough; People -> Process -> Tools. AI can be good at specific tasks but often misses context. Or its conclusions can be outright out of left field but still on the field so it’ll fool a lay person. Make sure you have your foundational practices in good order first.

A few more Human oversight: While AI can automate many tasks, human expertise remains crucial. Maintain human oversight and judgment when making critical decisions, especially regarding security breaches or potential risks. Transparency and accountability: Be transparent about using AI in cybersecurity and who is accountable for its decisions. This fosters trust and allows for responsible development and deployment. Regulatory compliance: Stay informed about and comply with relevant regulations related to AI use in cybersecurity, particularly regarding data privacy and security.

Stay compliant with relevant regulations and standards governing AI and cybersecurity, such as GDPR, or industry-specific guidelines. In the EU, the AI Act is coming soon as well.. Compliance frameworks provide guidelines for responsible AI deployment and risk management.

Never forget you are in an arms race. Cyber criminals are as well equipped with AI tools and as competent as your teams, and much more for rogue states-backed hackers. They don't bother with any compliance constraints. You are compelled to join this race and assign the necessary budgets. The issue is therefore to reach the critical size to afford significant security level. This is another driver of the corporate natural selection towards fitter and bigger, detrimental to small players.

Maybe don't use AI that much. If you're going to, make sure you have very tight and strict prompting schemas which account for self-correction and truthful generation of information.
