You’re struggling to find the right keywords for your SEO campaign. What’s the best way to do it?

I would rest the SEO Strategy on 3Ps- Prioritization, Portfolio and Placement. 1. Prioritization: Amongst the laundry list of keywords (KW) identify those which have high and relevant traffic for you. Eg Do you want to target informative (whats a bldc fan) or transactional (fans below Rs 3500) KW. If the brand objective is to drive consideration then target informative KW and if the objective is driving preference then target transactional KW 2. Portfolio: Try and target KW which eventually finds an answer in the brand portfolio. Eg. no point targetting high traffic KW like 3ltr waterheater if you dont have it in your portfolio 3. Placement: Make sure your content is well placed optimising on the above targetted KW

Understand the Goal first - what you actually want to achieve first. Is it brand awareness, traffic or quality leads? Once this is finalized focus on the intent based keywords research while focusing on important clusters with in that intent bucket. You can use tools like Glimpse, Keyword everywhere, keyword planner etc

Stay up to date on culture in your space. Staying current means you'll always have new ideas.

You can also use SEMrush's Keyword Magic Tool to find additional phrases related to your primary keywords. Use these synonyms as topics for blog posts and FAQ sections.

With related keywords you should also understand its search potential, competition, ranking difficulty, paid bids. Here's what I mean, suppose you choose the keyword "What are SEO tools" By this you should write content defining what tools are. Now say the user searches for "What are top SEO tools", now intent is changed to "list of tools". Right? Now if you do keyword research for this you may or may not get all the keyword metrics but it is a useful query and satisfies the search. Depending upon your business goals, and audience you bring this to practice.

When I'm looking at keyword intent I typically just start with Google. Type in the keywords and do a manual review of the top 4-5 ranked pages. Are these pages similar to what you're offering or are they completely different? If they are similar to your product/service/article topic then you know this is a relevant keyword to target. Go to SEMRush and use the Keyword Magic Tool to find similar keywords that you can optimize your page for. You can also take the top ranked pages and plug them into SEMRush to see which keywords each page ranks for. If the results dont match the page you're trying to rank for then you'll need to modify your keyword strategy. Look at related searches at the bottom of Google for more ideas.

When writing content, I always advocate for writing the content first with the intent of being the most helpful for the audience. Then, during editing and revisions, I consider how minor reworking could help add in keywords that make sense within the context. Creating quality content is always a higher priority than stuffing in keywords for the sake of trying to rank.

To help find the most valuable keywords, have a conversation with sales. Ask what your most qualified leads concerned about. Find out what they were looking for when they found you. The terms your customers or potential customers are using will translate into your best keywords.

Among the 4 factors(high search volume, low competition, high relevance, and high conversion potential) to be considered in while choosing quality keywords, keyword potential is the most important one. Especially in the cases where the business are high ticket even one conversion will make a huge difference.

When tackling an unfamiliar topic, there's a temptation to grab the output from a keyword tool and run with it. I have found more value with two forms of optimisation: First, run your seed keyword/s through all your tools and merge them, then dedupe. Further refine by intent. Second, eyeball the discovered keywords. Remove irrelevant ones, but also look for ones you did not think of. Insert them into the keyword tools and you will find that new suggestions will emerge. Remove non-performing keywords from your collection after a few months. Keyword optimisation is an ongoing task.

All great suggestions, high intent keywords are also said to have high commercial intent. These keywords signify a strong intent on the part of the searcher to conduct a transaction, submission or lead in general. So bearing in mind what colleagues said, after you analyze your competition, define your buyer persona, buyer intent, location go and get your keywords buy using Google auto complete, Google related searches and results pull trough Google keyword planner (I prefer to use Google) or some of this tools: Moz Keyword Explorer, SEMrush, Ahrefs, Keywordtool and I will add Ubesuggest. After that you could find some LSI keywords with Keys4up, LSI Graph or similar to optimize your pillar pages around your exact and long tail keywords.

If the website that you are going to work for has a decent amount of historical data.. You are sitting on a gold mine. The GSC and GA4 data itself will show a lot of opportunities that you can go at the start itself. Find keywords which are in position 4 to 15 using the GSC filter and work on it for a quick win.

I find that Google Trends or other trend tools like BuzzSumo/ Exploding Topics, etc. can be super helpful. Often times there might not be enough volume for a certain keyword but by watching what topics are on the rise in search you can create relevant content that will be there by the time the topic is trending. That way you can proactively close the gap and the payoff can be quite impactful.
