Before you speak to any audience, it's vital to invest time in understanding who your audience is. This entails finding out their backgrounds, professional fields, demographics and others. This will be depicted in your engagement with your audience that you have considered their perspectives, your audience is more likely to engage positively with your message.

Adjust your delivery on the fly based on their reactions, ensuring clarity and connection. Genba. This is Japanese term for "actual place". And this is one of my favorites way to really understand my audience. Before speaking to any audience, I usually come to my audiences' office, outlet, workshop or any of their working place. I try to understand their physical and social environment. I also speak with some of them to listen to their stories. This helps to get full understanding of my audience. Of course I also use other way to research the audience. But genba is really powerful. It feels different when you read information from google and comparing it to see the place by yourself. As Taiichi Ohno said "Without going to the genba, you are just guessing."

Once, I gave a keynote speech for a large Korean company in Indonesia. The directors were Korean, and most of the audience was Indonesian. The challenge was that the Korean directors didn't understand Indonesian, and the Indonesians didn't understand Korean. I started my presentation with "Annyeong haseyo," which made the directors smile and feel connected. Then, I continued in Indonesian. When the Korean directors seemed lost, I switched briefly to English, but kept it minimal so the Indonesian audience could still follow. I spoke slowly to ensure both groups understood. While this situation wasn't ideal, using the language most understood helped achieve good and acceptable results.

Use analogies that most people would be able to connect with. I have recently used Lego as analogy to explain the complexities of data engineering and analytics to a non-technical audience. :-) The feedback was extremely positive! Sports, education, family, TV, films... these are some of the places to inspire you to find a way to link your message with public culture.

Keep it simple and avoid using complex language and abbreviations. If you do need to use abbreviations, then explain them the first time you use them. This will be appreciated by those in the audience who are not as experienced in your field. At the end of your presentation, offer your audience an opportunity to speak to you on a 1:1 basis, if they want to dive deeper into the subject, or if there was anything they didn't understand. This way you are leaving the door open to all levels of experience in your audience, and establishing yourself as an expert in your field.

Este es un tema que genera mucho debate, pero no debemos olvidar que el lenguaje crea realidad. Por ejemplo, si siempre hablamos de "los" profesionales (médicos, ingenieros, vendedores, profesores) se nos queda en el tintero la referencia a las mujeres que tienen esas ocupaciones. Para comunicarnos con lenguaje inclusivo no sexista hay muchas opciones. A quienes no les acomoda usar los a/o/e, siempre está la opción de usar palabras neutras. Por ejemplo, si quiere hablar de los trabajadores, se puede mencionar "a quienes trabajan". En vez de usar hombres o mujeres, hablar de personas. Cómo ejemplo, en caso de un concurso laboral, ampliemos la convocatoria no solo llamando al ingeniero, sino a los profesionales titulados de ingeniería.
