I asked myself some tough questions before recently taking the leap from corporate life to entrepreneurship. You have to be brutally honest about your security and risk tolerance before even starting on your business plan. Are you ready for the constant 'hustle' of generating new leads? What is your support system like, both personally and professionally? Are you running from something or creating a new way of life? Even if my answers were yes, maybe, or I don’t know, one thing became clear: taking the leap and betting on myself is worth it - and you won't know what's what until you give a shot. Also, because nothing is permanent, and it’s okay to change your mind! :)

One of the biggest risks you’re taking is financial here; before you think about all the sacrifices/cutbacks you could make - be honest with yourself on what you want. First begin by listing where and how you want your life to be and look like - if you aren’t happy your business/entrepreneurial venture won’t thrive. Then price each of the items/experiences you want. Then work out which you can do without (don’t need). And then identify what’s going to change. Doing this step by step allows you to also ‘let go’ of the perks and pleasure of corporate life - so when you do make the jump, you’ve considered it and processed what it means before you start! Oh, and enlisted support from others too, because that’s key!

I think entrepreneurship has been overly glamourized, and while it's a good path to follow, it's important to be sure what one is getting themselves into. It takes a lot of discipline to work for yourself so really assessing if you have what it takes to push that wheel forward without the checks and balances that formal employment comes with.

Develop a Business Plan: Create a detailed business plan that outlines your business idea, target market, value proposition, competitive analysis, marketing strategy, and financial projections. This will serve as a roadmap and can help attract investors or partners. Market Research: Conduct thorough market research to understand your potential customers, identify competitors, and validate your product or service demand. This will help refine your business concept and strategies. Set Milestones: Establish clear, achievable milestones to measure progress and maintain momentum as you build your business.

Building networks is crucial when transitioning to entrepreneurship. Connect with industry professionals through events, social media, and professional groups. Establish relationships with mentors and peers who can offer support, advice, and opportunities. Effective networking opens doors to resources and partnerships that are essential for your success.

Never ever discount the role of how useful someone can be to your growth as an entrepreneur and to your business. Building a relevant online and offline network is the one thing you want to start doing way before taking the entrepreneurial plunge.

Budgeting: Create a comprehensive budget for startup costs, ongoing expenses, and unforeseen contingencies. Be realistic about the financial challenges of starting and running a business. Secure Funding: Depending on the nature and scale of your business, explore various funding options, such as personal savings, loans, angel investors, or venture capital. Financial Management: Set up a robust system for managing your finances, including accounting software or professional accounting services to keep track of cash flow, expenses, and revenue.

First and foremost you need to develop the skill of taking action instead of overthinking. As soon as you find yourself thinking ”someone should fix this”, you need to understand: That ”Someone” is you.

Enhance your skill set to encompass high-value functions essential for entrepreneurship. While expertise may not be required in every case, having a practical understanding will enable you to make informed decisions when assembling your team. Some examples of crucial skills include the basics of bookkeeping, recruiting, marketing, social media management, digital marketing, organizational management, and investment pitching.

Entrepreneurial Skills: Develop core entrepreneurial skills such as leadership, negotiation, sales, and networking. Consider attending workshops or seminars to enhance these skills. Industry-Specific Skills: If your new venture requires specific technical skills or knowledge, ensure you either possess these skills or have access to people who do. Continuous Learning: Stay committed to learning as your business grows. This includes keeping up with industry trends, customer feedback, and operational efficiencies.

In the initial phase, it is better to focus on your core strengths. Gradually acquire knowledge in other areas once you're more established. Be willing to invest in top-notch services for areas outside your expertise. Spreading yourself too thin early on can weaken your foundation.
