Empathizing with stakeholders allows you to understand their concerns but when such delays hit they necessarily don't need you to understand but take ownership of it. Articulate your communication that shows your involvement in their pursuit. Rather than saying "I understand your concerns" switch to saying "I know that this is really important to you and so is it for me. I would like to workout a solution with your guidance to get us back on track". This gives you a seat at their table and gain trust.
