Most importantly - never, ever cheap out on the power supply. Cheap ones can do the job, but the more expensive ones have better protection against power surges, shorts and other things that can go wrong. Remember: if the power supply goes bad, it can easily kill the rest of the hardware along with it. Another important part, is that your components are at least somewhat in balance. Buying a high-end GPU and pairing it with a cheap CPU is not a good option, as your computer will - as a rule of thumb - never be faster than the slowest component.

Buying the very top-of-the-line enthusiast hardware is never the economical solution, and it will be expensive to "stay on top", as you're often paying a heavy premium for just a smidge of extra performance. Using pre-builts as inspiration and various online configuration/builder tools can be a great help to find the best compromise that works for you. If building by yourself - do not forget to factor in the cost of the operating system as well.

If at all possible, go to the local computer/electronics store and see if they have a demo monitor that you can see and possibly test for yourself. This is by far the best way to gauge the picture quality and options that a given monitor has.

The recycling of your previous parts is really what makes building your own computer fun and affordable, and it gives you the option to replace most parts as needed. Some parts, like drives or power supplies can last for a long time if you learn to take care of them, and can remain a core component of a good number of builds.

Always get a second opinion on your hardware choice, especially if the budget is tight or if it's your first time building your own computer. Especially when it comes to gaming, there's a lot of varying biases to which parts and brands you should choose - key is, that you want to stay objective and realistic to your budget.
