You're aiming for success in executive coaching. How can continuous learning help you achieve it?

Executive coaches usually have a lot of experience, but we MUST remember that what got us to our success probably isn't the same formula that will work for everyone else. I try very hard to make sure I am thinking about what will work for my executive coaching client NOW vs. what worked for me when I was in their position. I've seen some coaches talk about how great they were working for JC Penny's back in the late 80s...Expecting that advice to be useful to someone in 2025 and beyond is like reading a history book to plan for the future. The executive ranks have changed - in both good and bad ways - and we have to remember that the only constant in business (and life) is change.

Ive found that it's the diversity of learning that really helps to get a broad perspective on the world, and the world of your clients. My recommendation is to read, listen or watch something from an industry thats completely new or unrelated to your normal environment and then reflect on what you have learned and how this relates to your world. There will always be some relevant connection, and it encourages you to step into unfamiliar worlds.

uring my journey of learning about coaching I would leave work and go to Starbucks and stand there at the door offering free coaching to people. I can only do this if I walk this path myself by getting curious about what activates my fears and self-doubt, and how I can meaningfully apply the critical skills of awareness, acceptance, and choice-making in my own life and work. By using myself as a test case, I can more authentically show up for my clients—both in cheering on their growth and holding steady as they address their own challenges. I can also let my clients know that I would never ask them do stretch in ways I am not prepared to do myself!

If you can do those two things, you will learn continuously and achieve a level of success you've dreamed of.
