When a stakeholder shifts project priorities, it's essential to remain adaptable and open to the new direction. I would navigate this unexpected change by first acknowledging the stakeholder's concerns and understanding the reasoning behind the shift in priorities. Next, I would work collaboratively with the stakeholder to reassess the project scope, timeline, and resources to ensure a smooth transition and successful project delivery.

In my experience, understanding the reason and benefits behind the change is critical, make sure they understand the full impact on the sourcing effort, and then if you agree that the change is best for the company, fully support the change and do your best to optimize procurement value to support their new priority. One of the only things we can count on today is change (taxes, death, change, etc.). Be adaptable.

Your stakeholder's priorities should be your priorities, especially if they are the decision makers or project drivers. The only exception to the rule is if you are aware of a gap between their team and their priorities. Then it is your responsibility to facilitate communication, align all levels and set the same priorities for the team as a whole. Besides above, my recommendation is to understand the drivers for the change priority, align yourself, the project and all deliverables to focus and deliver to the new goals and priorities. Rest of the project process should follow the established change management process you have setup for your project. It should be no different.

Could be big or small, but I bet if you’re thorough you can determine something they’ve overlooked or deprioritized and you and the team can capitalize on bringing something else to bear. - ask - listen - come back later - assess your current strengths and opportunities - align

Totally disagree with the sequence of steps. In step 1 the author proposes - "Engage your core team in analyzing the implications of the change." In Step 2 it is said - "Aim to understand their reasoning behind the priority shift". It means that without a deep understanding of the reasons the team spends time on analysis. PM must open the dialogue and must understand all reasons before going to the team.

I think one shall have the usual lessons learned session after a big change. Analysis why the volatility and need for such a sudden change may be helpful for the future of the project and OPAs in the company / office. And couple with effectiveness check of the change. 3 to 6M after integration. Lastly, make sure you reflect on the culture behind such changes and try to push for a more transparent decision making just for the sake of predictability. Again, let's avoid panic by being diligent :)
