I agree with this. It’s very crucial to validate others emotions so as to not escalate the situation as many people would feel upset if they’re not being understood. Additionally, as much as it is important to validate others’ feelings, make sure to communicate your own feelings clearly and respectfully, as communication between both parties is necessary for peer understanding.

I have found that by simply sharing exactly what a Peer Specialist is, that helps break down a person’s walls. Explaining that I am a mental health professional in long-term recovery. That I have been where they have been before, and have lived to tell the tale, usually helps people to open up pretty easily.

Experience Strength and Hope
An idea that helped me tremendously in this vein was something I learned in a treatment center. Having been a person who had a strong distrust of and aversion to authority, it was suggested to me that I may have a mistaken understanding of what authority is. I was asked to think of authority not as someone who exerts tyrannical control, but as someone who has specialized expertise in a particular area. I now see authorities as a tool I can use to navigate challenges more effectively by accepting guidance from people who have navigated those things effectively themselves. And this is what peer support is.
