Did you know that girls are more than twice as likely as men to be interrupted in meetings? …twice as likely to get comments on being emotional or dramatic…? 1.5 times more likely to have a colleague take credit for their work done. These are some of the things that undercut confidence and also the things that get other people to trust you less or not believe in your capabilities. The most important thing that all of us can do is to start realizing the macro impact of microaggressions and things we can subtly but collectively do to bring about a change in our daily routine and not just on special days like women’s day. Encourage women to speak in forums and meetings and share the voice that matters.

There is no better way of learning than by doing. One of the key actions I have taken to break into male-dominated space, whether finance, technology or entrepreneurship, is to take one step towards your goal everyday. This could be reaching out to someone in the industry for a conversation, reading some important research, testing an idea with a peer or putting your ideas onto paper. Incremental progress build into significant progress over time.

I agree with this but one thing that is so vital is your mindset …challenge why the industry is male dominated? Think about it - what does the difference in sex really offer ? Think about and be clear what you can bring to that organisation.. Why shouldn’t a woman be able to operate at exactly the same level ? Stay strong, believe in yourself and push back. There should be no difference. I have never felt that I was less capable than a man in any of the roles I have had. Men may have felt they were superior but in my view that was due to years of experience as opposed to being male…

Draw parallels; Ensure your CV and cover letter is tailored to the business you are entering. Lots of companies in the financial sector for example use software to sift through your CV to ensure they contain key phrases or words mentioned in the Job description or advert. If you are trying to break into a new industry, investigate those phrases and/or requirements and draw parallels on your own experiences to highlight where you have succeeded in a that area. Communication is key.

Dont be afraid to apply and put yourself out there. Just because it is male dominated, does not mean that they are not looking to employ women and challenge the status quo

Reflecting on my own journey, there was a time when I thought I needed to adopt a more traditionally masculine approach to thrive in male-dominated spaces. It took me a while to realize that my experiences as a woman imbued me with a set of unique strengths, shaped by the diverse path I've walked in life because of being a women. Embracing these individual qualities, rather than trying to fit a mold, is key. How does your individual strengths translates into your work? Once you find it out embrace that and help it fule your work to a higher level.

The most important to my opinion is, to work on your own self-confidence, know what you're worth and be aware of the fact, that you may face challenges that have nothing to do with your performance, but with your gender. Communicating your needs to peers or allies can also help.

It is highly worth asking for 360 feedback at every stage of your career. You can do this yourself by mapping out seniors, peers and juniors in your work and professional life. Ask them for feedback directly or use a third party coach and/ or survey tool.

It is also good to establish a Personal Brand, what are they knowing you for, Build a strong personal brand through your online presence, personal website, and social media profiles. Share your expertise and knowledge in your chosen field.

To begin, can we please accept that "breaking into a domain dominated by" other genders isn't unique to Women. Depending on the culture in which one is born, Men can also be challenged by stereotyping issues. The need of the century is being self-aware enough, to not let gender biases dominate one's assessment of performance. The day we (as a generation) get that self-awareness right, the rest will fall in place. Since this article is skewed to Women - here are my 2 bits - helps to have superior technical skills AND know how to further one's own agenda at the workplace.
