In my experience the most important thing is managament has to show every day their very strong commitment towards Safety and Enviroment protection

It’s vitally important to have buy-in. Safety is already important to everyone because we instinctively avoid illness, injury, and of course death, BUT making the practical vision easily communicable keeps safety at the forefront of everyone’s mind. It allows the mindset and process to be front and center at all times.

Critical leadership skills for fostering a culture of safety include clear communication, leading by example, empathy, proactive risk assessment, promoting continuous improvement, and ensuring accountability across the organization.

Having the best visions and ideas, without the ability to bring your workforce on that journey through open and honest communication, is like having the best kite in the world without a string. The greatest leaders will not just tell you what the vision is but ensure you know from the start, how you are going to be part of it.

Communication is vital to convey safety expectations, procedures, and policies to all team members. Demonstrate safety-conscious behavior consistently to inspire others. Understand employees' safety concerns and address them with compassion. Provide regular training and education on safety measures and best practices. Hold individuals accountable for their actions. Foster employees' teamwork and cooperation. Encourage continuous improvement by soliciting feedback and adapting safety measures accordingly. Be prepared to handle safety crises effectively and efficiently. Stay updated with best practices and adapt safety protocols accordingly. Resolve conflicts related to safety concerns promptly and fairly.

Recognition acknowledges and reinforces positive safety behaviors and outcomes. When leaders publicly recognize individuals or teams for their commitment to safety, it signals that their efforts are valued and appreciated. This positive reinforcement encourages others to emulate those behaviors, creating a ripple effect throughout the organization.

Leadership is only accountable for all safety performances. Down the level are responsible for following set rules and procedures. However it's leadership to monitor effective implementation of safety system and course correction proactively before any major incident takes place. Though quality like effective communication is important, I consider "WALK THE TALK" the most important aspect of leadership quality.

This can be done through verbal recognition, incentives, or other forms of rewards. Recognizing and appreciating employees' efforts reinforces the importance of safety and motivates others to follow suit.

The fundamental driver for creating a culture of safety - is to brand safety as a mainstream component of how operations leadership communicates with the workforce. Clear messaging that showcases employees engaged in safe operating practices (banners/symbols supporting a unified team/logos on shirts/gloves) and senior leadership providing commentary on setting the tone/expectations for what safe performance looks like. Employees need to have a consistent voice in providing advice on how their concerns can be satisfactorily addressed.

Leaders must set a positive example by following safety protocols themselves. When employees see their leader’s prioritizing safety, they are more likely to do the same.

Through my observations, I've encountered numerous site managers expressing their leadership styles diversely. While some are supportive, others prove unsupportive. However, the common goal is to achieve elevated safety standards. Unfortunately, when facing critical paths or project delays, some managers tend to overlook safety concerns, urging employees to expedite work for a swift project completion. This approach often results in increased injuries and project damages, leading to further delays. Every leader should grasp this concept to maintain a balanced workplace, ensuring the safety of employees.

Empowerment and collaboration is a key leader ship skill to create a safety culture. By empowering your team you make them feel incharge and they are more likely to perform well and fulfill the responsibility better. Collaboration is also important with the different levels in organizations so every one is working towards common vision and goals.

Empathy, key to connecting with the team, facilitates the identification of security issues by understanding their concerns. Collaborative leadership becomes an engine for solutions, encouraging active and diverse participation in problem-solving. A concrete example is the promotion of open communication, where employees feel empowered to highlight risks without fear. From my experience in Occupational Health and Safety, I've observed that an effective leader goes beyond regulatory compliance, leading the way towards comprehensive transformation. The key lies in collaborating with all stakeholders to design effective and sustainable strategies that not only ensure safety but also promote overall health and well-being in the workplace.

To do this, assign tasks such as annual audits to the management team and report their monthly progress to them. Establish an HSE team consisting of volunteers from among employees and include them in all decisions and processes. Let them represent you in the departments. This way, your security staff will become an entire business and you will share everyone's responsibilities with everyone else!
