One of the most popular and comprehensive frameworks for understanding a fulfilling life is the PERMA model, developed by Martin Seligman, the founder of positive psychology. PERMA stands for Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment. These are the five domains that contribute to human happiness and well-being, and they can be measured and enhanced by various activities and interventions. For example, you can increase your positive emotions by practicing gratitude, optimism, and humor. You can boost your engagement by finding and pursuing your strengths, passions, and flow states. You can improve your relationships by expressing kindness, empathy, and appreciation. You can find more meaning by aligning your actions with your values, goals, and causes. And you can achieve more accomplishment by setting and pursuing SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) goals.

One thing I found helpful is to establish a daily journalling practice each morning and evening, taking a few minutes each time to reflect on a few key tenants. In the morning I encourage people to highlight what they are most excited for in the day ahead, what they are grateful for (and why) and what their priorities are for the day (and why). In the evening I encourage them to write their wins for the day (and why), what they learnt from the day and who they helped in the day. This simple exercises tick the boxes of recognising- appreciation, priorities, personal growth, daily progress and contribution.

I disagree with the PERMA model because it emphasizes external factors that are subject to change. True happiness stems from internal sources. Consider relationships, for instance. If your happiness depends solely on them, losing a friend could indeed cause sadness. However, it's important to recognize that such sorrow is often transient. Relationships may evolve or new connections can be forged, offering opportunities for renewed joy and fulfillment.

By Practicing gratitude you can be someone who doesn't necessarily make a lot of money. For instance, when I was making 10 times less than what I have been used to making the last 4 years of my life I was just as happy because I was grateful for the experiences and opportunities in my life. When I'm too focused on the ego- it usually doesn't lead to fulfillment and joy but when I'm grounded in having fun, and having rich meaningful relationships that's when I start to blossom and see life for what it truly is - A Miracle.

And relatedness means having a sense of connection, belonging, and support from others. You can enhance your autonomy by identifying and pursuing your intrinsic motivations, rather than external rewards or pressures. You can enhance your competence by seeking feedback, learning new skills, and overcoming challenges. And you can enhance your relatedness by building trust, intimacy, and mutual respect with others.

You can develop a growth mindset by changing your self-talk, praising your efforts rather than your outcomes, seeking constructive criticism, and learning from your mistakes.

Having a growth mindset can be more liberating than a goal mindset. Growth is continuous whereas a goal mindset can change behaviour once the goal is accomplished. Taking steps everyday to grow is achievable for most. It can reduce the stress associated with reaching a target by a set time.

You always learn more about what you do like. 2. I would skip class to work at the Rutgers DNA Repository but I was too chicken to let them know so I got laid off because they thought I was cheating the system even though it was just because I was afraid of conflict. 3. Repeated 3rd grade because I went from Public School to Private and that was very difficult for me because my reading comprehension and skills weren't advanced enough (Who Fails 3rd Grade?) I'm sharing with you all of this because we all have struggles we all have something that we are dealing with.

A fulfilling life is when we are not holding ourselves back from doing the things we want to try. Many times, we hold ourselves back because we are scared of failure. We are not taught to celebrate failure. But if we put the growth mindset hat or the abundance hat, we can reframe this situation as a learning opportunity. We failed because we showed up in the arena. We learn from our previous attempt and attempt it again. Always remember, a kid does not learn how to walk on its first attempt. It keeps falling, failing, getting hurt and attempting again. And finally one day, the baby walks. We need to learn from the baby and apply it in our efforts too.
A fifth and final component of a fulfilling life according to positive psychology is happiness habits, which are regular practices backed by scientific evidence that can improve your mood, well-being, and resilience. Examples of these habits include meditating for 10 minutes a day to reduce stress, exercising for 30 minutes a day to enhance physical and mental health, journaling for 15 minutes a day to reflect on thoughts and feelings, expressing gratitude for three things a day to increase positivity, performing a random act of kindness a day to improve social and emotional skills, and savoring a positive experience a day to amplify joy and pleasure. While these are important components of positive psychology, you can also explore other aspects such as resilience, optimism, hope, self-compassion, and spirituality to find what works best for you. Remember that a fulfilling life is not a destination but an ongoing journey. You have the power and potential to make it an amazing one.
