What innovative techniques are used to capture candid moments?

Using my favorite lens, the 70-200mm f/2.8, I capitalize on its versatility and reach to photograph candid moments discreetly. Its ability to compress space brings me closer to the subject's emotions while the fast aperture ensures a beautifully isolated focus, capturing intimate, authentic expressions without ever stepping into the personal space of those I photograph.

A "longer" lens does not have to be a huge telephoto. An 85mm lens is a telephoto. When I am trying to get "candid" shots, my goal is to be discrete and a 200mm lens is NOT discrete. Prime lenses are smaller, less conspicuous, and have a wider aperture for low light. I find that the 85mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 or the 105 f/1.4 allow me to step back from the moments but also allow me to capture the moment without making a big scene. Thus making an image that is authentic and real. The wider aperture allows me to shoot without a flash in low light as well as create that separation between the subject(s) and the background. It also gives me that soft, buttery background we love so much. So to capture those candid moments look to Prime lenses.

Mais pour capturer des moments sincères et honnêtes, rien ne remplacera l'immersion au long cours avec vos sujets et je recommande pour cela une focale de type "reportage" comme le 35 mm. Certes, cette technique demande du temps, de la patience, de la discrétion et de l'écoute pour gagner la confiance, mais c'est la meilleure manière pour obtenir une photograhie qui correspond réellement à la réalité.

As a professional photographer, I value the classic technique of using the viewfinder over shooting from the hip or relying on the screen. For me, the viewfinder offers a more immersive and precise experience, allowing me to connect deeply with the scene and compose my shots with intention and clarity. It's not just about tradition; it's about feeling the essence of true photography through a focused and personal engagement with my subject.

Shooting low and up changes the story. Shooting from the hip should be done when appropriate to the story, otherwise is looks awkward and uncomfortable. This technique is great for people seated and you are standing or if the subject(s) are a distance away from the lens. However, if it relates to the story you want to tell, shooting low and close can and should be used. Just remember that shooting from the hip, although discrete does change the story you may be seeing. Look for ways to use it so that it enhances your story not just because you don't want to be seen. My favorite from the hip shot is a Dutch Angle that puts everything slightly eschew and creates a image that is unsettling and uncomfortable. Remember your story and shoot low.

I'm drawn to using reflections in my photography as they open a doorway to a more layered and voyeuristic perspective, crafting scenes rich with complexity and intrigue. Mirrors are just the beginning; I find a unique allure in capturing the world through still ponds or any reflective water surface, each offering a distinct and mesmerizing combination that transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary.

For capturing candid moments innovatively, consider using a slow shutter speed with flash to create a sense of motion while maintaining focus on the subject. Experiment with double exposure for artistic, layered images. Utilize burst mode to capture a sequence of actions. Employ natural framing to discreetly photograph subjects. Be observant and anticipate moments for a more natural shot. Blend into the environment to avoid drawing attention. Use silent shutter mode to minimize noise. These techniques help in creatively capturing candid moments, adding depth and artistic flair to your photography.

Be part of the crowd. Using a long lens is easy, but I personally find that blending in with the crowd and shooting with a short(er) lens yields better photos. People just seem to act differently when they're aware of a photographer being able to photograph them from a distance versus a being with a friend/acquaintance (who happens to have a "nice camera").
