What do you do if your IT Strategy interview is riddled with common mistakes?

In todays connected age, virtually every successful business is going to a digital business powered by technology. The biggest mistake in an IT strategy interview is ignoring the business impact of IT and getting lost in technology speak. Rather than IT speak, we need to speak the language of business and understand how can IT strategy help business achieve its goals and deliver real value.

Address common mistakes by understanding the context of the IT strategy, conducting thorough research, and tailoring responses to demonstrate understanding and alignment with organizational goals and challenges.

If my IT Strategy interview is plagued with common mistakes, I would approach the situation with professionalism and adaptability. Firstly, I would remain composed and focus on effectively communicating my expertise and experience, despite any interruptions or misunderstandings. It's crucial to actively listen to the interviewer's questions and address them directly, ensuring clarity and relevance in my responses. If I notice recurring mistakes, I would tactfully offer clarification or additional insights to steer the conversation back on track. Moreover, I would utilize examples from my past projects or achievements to demonstrate practical application of IT strategy principles and showcase my problem-solving abilities.

1) Lack of Company Research(Landscape): Understand the company's business and IT needs for strategic alignment. 2) Excessive Jargon: Communicate complex IT concepts in simple terms. 3) Ignoring Business Impact: Demonstrate how IT strategies advance business goals. 4) No Use Cases: Provide specific examples showing your strategic expertise. 5) Ineffective Communication: Articulate your ideas clearly, showing their organizational applicability. and also Showcase the benefits of new technologies for the company. 6) Ignoring the Human Element: Address the impact of IT strategies on employees, efficiency, processes, and culture. 7) Not Engaging with Questions: Pose insightful questions to display "passion" "engagement" and understanding.

I’m assuming this question is pitched at the interviewer so I'll explain what I expect from a candidate. The point of any IT strategy is to deliver on the overall business strategy. The first thing I expect a good candidate to have is a grasp of what the business does, and be able to ask the right questions to understand the business strategy. Mistake 1 is good grounding for prep. During the interview, I check their understanding of business strategy, provide a synopsis and look for them to ask the right questions to properly understand the current situation before any suggestion of how to move forward. Then, I’d look for them to point out current IT gaps and suggest ways these could be plugged.

You FIX them!!! Simple! That's it! ...and because LinkedIn won't allow me to just post a 3 word response, I have to fill in the gaps with nonsense ;-)

Stay calm and confident: Nervousness or lack of confidence can undermine your performance in an interview. The IT domain is a very structured domain, which is why there are some many frameworks and certifications for IT professionals to follow. In IT interviews following established frameworks will help you reinforce that you are both organized but also understand those frameworks that will govern your work in the field.

PESTLE Analysis: Conduct a PESTLE analysis to examine the Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, and Environmental factors that could impact the organization and its industry. • Stakeholder Analysis: Identify and analyze key stakeholders outside the organization, such as customers, suppliers, partners, and regulators. Understanding their needs, expectations, and power can inform strategy development.

You miss providing a common language for IT professionals, business executives, and compliance auditors to communicate with each other about IT controls, goals, objectives, and outcomes.

Neglecting to use a framework in IT strategy can result in chaos. For instance, a company developing software without following Agile or ITIL might face issues with project management and resource allocation, risking project failure.

Learn and Prepare for Future Interviews: Use the experience as a learning opportunity. Research and familiarize yourself with common IT strategy frameworks, their applications, and when to use them. Practice applying these frameworks to case studies or hypothetical scenarios to better prepare for future interviews. Consider Additional Training or Education: If you find that you lack familiarity with IT strategy frameworks, consider seeking additional training or education. Online courses, workshops, or certifications in strategic management or IT strategy can provide valuable insights and skills to enhance your interview performance.

During interview, body chemistry is at its peak but why shouldn't it be? Your years of knowledge and expertise are at stake. Where, Qualifying an interview will give you a chance to further excel in your career but not qualifying will also give you an opportunity to enhance in what you lack. Staying focus and having a roadmap is very important during an interview. Even a simple question can distract you from an actual answer and led you to the valley of mistakes. Thinking logically in a step forms can help to answer in the most strategical way. 1. think right to the point 2. Analyze if this answer is relatable 3. Communicate precisely that relatable part.

Depending on the size of the organization, I find most frameworks cumbersome and overkill. I have found that it is important to align the information technology function with the business and not the other way around. This is best done by mapping out the business process and then looking at the IT function for people, processes, and tools. Then, review the business strategy documents (if they exist). Then, ask each of the people, processes, and tools: Does this support the business process optimally? This will generate a lot of issues to consider. The only other thing I regularly do is create a SWOT analysis and then share it with both the IT team and the business leadership for feedback and refinement.

I think this answer is always best given from experience and includes two things. The first is to ensure good operational data is being collected in the systems and processes; the underlying data must be accurate. The second is to define the various KPIs and scoreboard items that will impact the business most significantly. Finally, it is to create the delivery of this information on a regular and helpful cadence. It is also advisable to create the responses if the KPIs are not being met. For me, that would include a description of a data warehouse I created for the USAF, which generated reports and charts of all key operational processes and financial results.

Not providing specific, data-driven answers in an IT strategy interview can hinder decision-making. For instance, instead of saying "optimize the system," it's better to suggest specific actions backed by data, like "implement caching to reduce query response time by 30%."

Use the STAR Method: Structure your responses using the Situation, Task, Action, Result (STAR) method. This approach helps you provide specific examples and results from your past experiences, which can make your answers more compelling and data-driven. Highlight Relevant Experience: Emphasize any past experiences where you were data-driven and specific in your approach. Discuss projects or initiatives where you collected and analyzed data to inform decision-making or drive strategic outcomes.

Try to avoid high level items in your strategic roadmap, when proposing it, mixed with too low level (too specific projects). Be specific and keep your IT Strategy interview items in the same semantic level.

Once you understand the business goals and objectives of the business, it is easy to define the strategy of technology, but if that strategy doesn't exist, a data driven methodology then you are in a big problem. The data strategy has to be the underlying foundation of whatever you do going forward in the IT strategy. If the organization doesn't have a data strategy data lake, and how you want to use the years of data off the organization to improve the business sales and customer experience then it is going to be a big challenge. And how can you solve and position a solution for a given challenge using data and the facts. the goal company should be a data driven company.

Data science is the backbone of any technology. Without it, we can not evolve. It goes same for humans. Data in our brain helps us to drive our action. Clearer the data, better we steer.

Soft skills is the very big part of the IT strategy and leadership. If you don't showcase your communication, your collaboration your ability to negotiate and sell your idea as a leader and convince people to move in the direction then it's going to be very challenging even you have the best idea and best idea is when it is conveyed correctly to the audience. So make sure that you keep all of those things in mind in terms of storytelling, presenting and persuasion, negotiation and convincing powers on top of that your people management skills are also going to becoming very, very important here.

Yes this is large topic and typical situation. Ultimately, ITStrategy is meant to be read / consumed by people,.. so soft people skills are essential. Great strategies fail if they cannot be communicated with good soft skill, or related to.. and explain to people. People have fears and behaviors that are motivated by something, and soft factors, language and culture skills are essential to communicate aspects of IT Strategies. Reversely, sometime light IT Stragegies can be super effective because the leadership team has excellent soft skills, and the organization receives lots of small impulses that enable them to understand and execute on the strategy.

Always listen to the question being asked rather than trying to formulate your responses ahead. Soft skills are paramount in any job not just in outline the benefits of it to the IT strategy. Strategy will only work when the vision is sold to the people responsible for executing it. Communicating this vision is essential to its success.

Strategies are often not perfect and do not need to be static. Asking for feedback, or listening to feedback is essential. Wording, context, example documentation can all be adjusted. Sometimes the intent just comes out wrong, and other people have much better ways / words to document strategic intent. It is seldom that 1 personis always perfect at defining / writing stratiegies. Massive and broad amounts of review process pre- publication is essential. Once published, periodic reviews of relevance is also important, especially over time as stratic goals are achieved.

This is a tricky one and needs to be handled with utmost care as you could come across too pushy or desparate. Feedback or asking the next steps should be done politely at the end so they know you are as keen as hopefully them. Leave them thinking you can bring the strategy to life.

Although it can be really hard to listen to the feedback you are given, it gives you a huge boost in the understanding of who you are in the eyes of others. So when you are done with the interview, try showing interest in the feedback on the approach you have chosen.

Mistake #6: not following up. You don't get the context of a company through interviews. Strategy definition and, most of all, execution, is heavily influenced by stakeholder's interests and ambitions [which could or could not be 100% aligned with the business mission], but that's not something you get through interviews, but rather from human interactions. If you want to deliver something meaningful, you need to understand and influence.

If your IT strategy interview is full of common mistakes, tactfully address them. For instance, if the interviewer lacks basic IT understanding, offer clarification. If they seem disorganized, gently guide the conversation back on track. Stay professional and constructive for a productive exchange.

All the points are important, however, if you discover a lack of qualification, maybe the best would be to step back, re-assign goals and ask for a real professional to complete the interview. Strategy is not a thing to re-do every week or learn with, a professional team should do it. Mistakes here have a high price.
