More specifically... Quality Control is a collection of Risk Mitigation techniques implemented for processes that are NOT trusted to consistently produce conforming product. Quality Control is NOT "Value-Added". It is "Non-Value-Added but Necessary". EVERY QC point is an opportunity for a Process Improvement. And the goal of Process Improvement should be to refine or modify each process such that QC is unnecessary. THAT translates into greater efficiency & lower cost. Understanding the "basics" of QC & Process Improvement will make you "average". Having a Lean Six Sigma Green or Black Belt will set you apart. And understanding how to apply TRIZ (inventive problem solving) to processes will take you to the next level.

Make a list of the challenges you are facing. Improvement opportunities often lie within the problems we encounter. Start by listing the problems and then address them in ascending order. Begin with the first problem, analyze it, and find a solution. Once you have a solution, take the necessary actions or corrections. The important part is sustenance: you must evaluate the actions regularly to ensure the problem does not reoccur. Conduct regular sustenance checks. This practice will take time, but you will surely achieve the best results. Give the process time, and avoid shortcuts if you want genuine results.

The exceptional problem solvers should be able to illustrate their problem-solving process using "Apollo Root Cause Analysis" (Book by Dean Gano) – understanding that every event MUST have both an action & condition present in the same place & time. And discussion should include a conclusion relating Common Cause & Special/Assignable Causes Variations (Read Shewhart & Deming) that led to the event (in many cases this is obvious without a statistical study) as well as an awareness of any "Technical Contradictions" (a TRIZ concept) present.
