The biggest mistake I've made walking into a room filled with exceptionally talented educators is telling them what they were doing wrong, before beginning to hear what they had to say. One of the crucial aspects of facilitation I've learned is making the workshop about them, their issues and what they want to know and not sticking to a well-rehearsed and prepared script. Setting an agenda after this discussion where their issues and topics met halfway is a sure-shot way of building a strong relationship with the participants.

To effectively connect with workshop participants, it's crucial to establish a positive rapport and arouse their interest within the first 15 minutes. Given that participants come from diverse backgrounds and have various responsibilities, it's essential to make them feel at ease, comfortable, and confident that the session will be highly beneficial. Achieving this connection should be a priority in the initial 30 minutes of the session.

This aspect of facilitation is key to engaging our adult learner. They bring so much professional expertise and personal experiences to our learning table! It is important for us to provide space throughout our sessions to listen to our participant experts. Not only does this show our respect for the fact that they are exhibiting vulnerability and resilience by being here as well as to guide our session focus and strategies in real time. So much of our planning around workshop sessions is the topic/outcomes. But really, it is about the change agents themselves, the participants. Wear a smile, be friendly, be genuine, deliver new knowledge, don't be boring and repetitive, involve the participants in interesting activities to keep them awake and make sure they benefited & came out with new outcomes by asking them sudden questions or giving them before and after ungraded assessments just for fun and to consolidate the information in their heads. Simply, play and learn and be sociable.

I have been pondering over this issue for a while now and I have had to build a new piece of software to solve it. Workshops are intrinsically relation based and therefore a common workshop platform has to cater to multiple requirements. Some workshops are collaborating whereas others can get competitive. So work better with individual participation whereas some work only if there are teams. However, one common thread is if the key learnings can be captured after every activity, then a strong sentiment analysis algorithm can help identify the resonance with the participants.
